Appearing the book (still on schedule for spring '21), it's the Stock Association. It's a vintage bunkhouse, looking little different we suspect from when it was built some eighty years ago. Used seasonally on cattle drives, it's got real character. Those retro chairs! Picture it: a game of poker, a nickle a hand, coffee's on, someone strumming on the guitar, the howling of coyotes in the distance. No internet, no worldly troubles, just peace & quiet & old friends.
A memorial to a railway worker who died on the job over a century ago. Know more: https://www.bigdoer.com//explorin/railway-grave-revisited/ Two different stories as to how it played out have come to light, so we've shared both. Interestingly, what he died building is similarly no more, the track on which he toiled pulled up & the line abandoned some years ago.
We're back! Here's a little stone house on a huge military base & we have a little history to share. Know more: https://www.bigdoer.com//little-stone-house-on-the-prairie/ Below, Coinoath Sarsfield and our military escort chat about plans for the shoot. Running this site is a huge amount of work. Watch for this in our upcoming book! This old ranch looks straight out of the 1800s, like something you might see in a western TV series. Truth is, that's it exactly. It's a film set & if you're into the old west genre, you probably seen it before. They let us wander about one evening unhindered & standing here, let me tell you the illusion was real. Only thing missing was a couple cowpokes riding home after a long day. Let's hear what you think!
Here's remains of an abandoned Eastern Orthodox Monastery secreted away in a wooded grove in Northern Alberta. Empty since the '60s, they used what ever they had lying around to build the structures here: logs, branches, mud, straw, salvaged timbers & more. This most interesting subject will appear in our upcoming book. We even heard from a present day member of the same religious group & will share some of his stories. Please, let us know what you think.
A long time ago someone sent us this old Miles for Millions March map (a hyperwalk in the 60s/70s used to raise awareness for the under privileged) Today, we act on it and will follow in their footsteps. We're not getting any younger, so we might break down the 50km route into multiple chunks over many days. Here at Stampede Park, it begins.
This fine old house will be making an appearance in the book. It's rather unusual in that it remained very much as built before being abandoned some thirty years ago. No electricity, no indoor "facilities", heat was by wood stove, cooking too, the only modern concession, a phone put in late in the game (we found the 1980s install order). The building is degrading fast, yet has this elegance about it. Lets hear what you think!
