Happy #taxonomistappreciationday to all the taxonomists out there! Often undervalued and underfunded, the work of taxonomists is the base for the biological sciences and our understanding of the diversity of life.

Great shots of worms collected from deep-sea hydrothermal vents using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Perhaps it's time we get our own SEM? ;)

We'd like to wish everyone happy holidays from all of us at Biologica! We thought a #tardigrade in space was a great metaphor for overcoming adversity in this difficult year. Thank you to all our colleagues (past and present), clients, and collaborators for your continued support!

Today is International Polychaete Day! Polychaetes are a type of worm with protrusions (or parapodia) bearing spiny bristles, hence their other name ‘bristle worms’. Not everyone finds worms exciting, but sometimes our smallest and seemingly insignificant critters exhibit incredible adaptations!... Our team of freshwater and marine taxonomists identify polychaetes on a daily basis. Polychaetes are often an abundant group in the benthic samples we assess and provide key information on the places they live. #internationalpolychaeteday #wormwednesday

Is #isolationhair getting to you? It could be worse! The funky look of this krill (Euphausia pacifica) is due to the parasites attached to it, and not a bad hair day. #isolationhairdontcare #taxonomytuesday #euphausid #marine #plankton

#taxonomistappreciationday comes at a interesting time this year. As we've moved on to a rotating schedule to decrease the number of people in the lab at any one point, our taxonomists and technicians have accommodated this change with a positive outlook. Thanks for all you do!

Happy #stpatricksday. While we can't go out and celebrate, the algae still can! This is Crucigenia, a green colonial alga that is often recorded in North America.
