We use recycled materials as much as possible when building parrot toys. It's good for the environment and provides a broad array of colours and textures for the birds to experience! You can see the Lorikeets being active in exploring the different ways to interact with this box. Within a day it will be tiny cardboard pieces scattered across the exhibit. We call this a "Destructible Toy"! Parrots are very active and we give them different enrichment at least once a day. ...We have daily records of what each parrot is getting and notable reactions. It's one of the ways we work hard to provide excellent care to animals. Next time you're here you can ask any of the animal care staff about enrichment. Enrichment is important for the animals and we're happy to talk about our work. We'll chat on your next visit! #birdenrichment #zookeeperlife #parrots #lorikeets #parrotenrichment #birdkingdom

What does the view out your window look like right now? Even when it's raining outside, it's still nice at Bird Kingdom! You can visit the world's largest INDOOR free-flying aviary and not worry about rain or cold. This is the view out the window from the Small Bird Aviary (a few years ago). You can see the Rainbow Bridge and the Niagara River still roiling from its trip over Niagara Falls. So on a rainy or snowy day, we hope you remember that you could be warm and amazed,... on a tropical adventure with us. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit! #birdkingdom #aviary #niagarafalls #niagararegion #niagarafallstourism #niagara #niagarafalls

Bird beaks grow in layers throughout their lives. There is a core of bone surrounded by sheets of protein (keratin) that constantly grow outward. Parrots, like this Green-winged Macaw, chew on things constantly to help wear down this keratin and keep it from growing too long. By the way, Macaws can apply around 1,000 pounds per square inch of force with their beaks. The fact that protein can withstand this force at all is amazing. But it does wear down over time. So if yo...u see a bird that has a line across its beak it has successfully worn down the top layer of protein and you can already see new layers replacing it from underneath! Animals have so many interesting ways to survive in their natural environments! #parrots #macaw #birdbeaks #birdfacts #aviary #birdkingdom #greenwings #birdeducation

Did you know that birds can probably see MILLIONS of colours that you cannot? Most humans have three types of colour receptors in our eyes: red, green, and blue. Most birds have four, adding a violet/ultraviolet receptor. So birds can see ultraviolet light, which is already amazing. But they can combine ultraviolet with our existing set of colours, letting them see exponentially more combinations of colours than humans can! It's enough to make you see a "plain" bird differ...ently forever. You can't know what it sees when it looks back at you. If this blew your mind we would appreciate you sending it to someone who likes birds. They might already know about this, or you might change their world forever. PS - Pigeons probably have five types of colour receptors, so who could even IMAGINE what a pigeon can see!! #birdeyes #birdfacts #animalsenses #ornithology #avian #aviary #birdkingdom

Zebra Finches can talk to their babies BEFORE they hatch! In hot temperatures parents will make an "incubation call". Chicks that experience this call in the egg will hatch with leaner bodies, better adapted to the hot environment. They will also be more likely to do an incubation call for their own chicks when they grow up. So they can change how their chicks grow with an audio signal. It's a privilege to live in a world where we are discovering things like this. What wi...ll be discovered tomorrow? You can see zebra finches calling in our Small Bird Aviary. Maybe seeing birds doing their natural behaviours will connect something that lets you make the next big discovery. We'll be here when you're ready to take a tropical adventure! #zebrafinches #birdsofaustralia #birds_adored #birdportrait #birdsong #birdfacts #aviary #birdkingdom

So much yellow! Golden pheasants have plant pigments in their feathers that give them brilliant yellow feathers, skin, eyes, and beaks. The pigments can break down and fade in prolonged sunlight. But the golden pheasant lives primarily in shady, dense forest. They forage on the ground during the day, so their bright pigments continue to stay bright! The Golden Pheasants are usually at ground level in the Main Aviary. The trees growing overhead and soil substrate are very... similar to their natural environment. You can watch the bright colours flash among the leaves. It really is like going on a tropical adventure! We look forward to your next visit! Ray Miller, via Pixabay.
