These temperatures make us think about the advantages of having some solid cold adaptations this time of year... Take voles for example: they create a huge network of tunnels under the snow with air shafts connected to the surface. The temperature under the snow is much warmer than above (must be nice. We’re not bitter, you are. Sorry, that’s the frostbite talking ). Anyways, food is readily available with grasses, seeds, and bark remaining unfrozen down there, plus most predators have to rely on their sense of hearing to get you. Not half bad on a day like today.

Happy Halloween We run into our share of ghoulish creatures with empty stares and sluggish movements, sometimes when we look at camera footage and sometimes when we accidentally bump into ANY coworker near 5 pm on the day when all the research grant proposals for next field season are due #earlyrisers #procastination #wildlifebiology

Have been very busy trying to beat the snow (failed spectacularly) these last couple weeks. Here’s a couple beautiful eggs we found in one of our nest boxes that didn’t quite make it into ducklings. They’re also quite possibly the rankest smelling things we’ve run into this year! #fieldbiology #northernBC #ducks #crackingeggs #inthenameofresearch #curiositykills
