Sigh! the last of our strawberries. They were great this year. Froze some and made jam. Next up is rasberries.

Welcome to our first post on our Black River Forest Garden Facebook page. Robin and I have a small homestead where we hope to model a sustainable homestead that fits into the challenges of living in the busy modern world. We both have years of experience in gardening, but are real greenhorns in doing things on a farming scale. So bear with us you old-time farmers! We want to share our adventure with you and hope you can laugh along with us and either learn from our misadve...ntures or offer us some tips. When we moved to the 22 acre site in February 2012, it was an abandoned farm with two small cottages. This is an amazing property on the Black River in Prince Edward County. We are situated between two ravines with 1,000 feet over riverfront. We are blessed with deep Class A soils, and good water. The property also includes a wide range of natural habitats. Our dream is to restore those parts of the land that are not suitable for agriculture to diverse natural habitat. We have river bottom forest, rolling hill with meadows, and have planted 4,000 trees to reestablish a mixed forest. On the more recently cultivated areas, we are taking advantage of the deep soils by planting berry bushes, nut and fruit trees. We also have our veggie patch and round things out by maintaining poultry and pigs. Once our berry patch is established, we will explore producing cordials, sipping vinegars, and other specially products.
