Have you ever heard of tuckahoe? . Tuckahoe is a hard, rounded, dark mass that is sometimes found when plowing land in aspen parkland areas. Because of its appearance it is often mistaken for fossil pemmican. Unlike the tuckahoe, pemmican would decompose quickly in the ground. . Tuckahoe is actually associated with aspen poplar roots and is the resting stage or sclerotium of a fungus. In favourable conditions it may send up a fruiting body - a mushroom.... . The name tuckahoe comes from Indigenous groups in what is now Virginia and means round loaf or cake, however the tuckahoe found in Alberta is not edible. It can be from two to ten inches in diameter and can weigh up to as much as ten pounds. . Lee Manning .
