Foot Fact/FAQ Friday Q: What is that painful bump on the top of my foot? A: In Pedorthic clinics, three of the most common protrusions we see at the top of the ...midfoot are ganglion cysts, boney exostosis, and rheumatoid nodules. While these three examples are not life threatening, they can be very painful and even debilitating causing people to give up their favourite activities. Consider the bump itself. Is it soft and does it seem to be able to move a bit under the skin or does it feel firm and stay in place? Ganglion cysts tend to feel soft. They can go away on their own or they may need to be drained. In some cases, surgical removal is required. A boney exostosis, or bone spur, feels hard to the touch. When we see them on the top of the midfoot it is often where two bones form a joint and where there is stress or damage on the bone over a long period of time that results in excess bone growth. Rheumatoid nodules are directly related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). They are firm bumps that form near joints impacted by RA. What can you do if you have a bump on your foot? 1. Keep an eye on it. Consult your primary health care provider immediately if it has a colour that is different from the skin around it, changes size or shape, has a noticeably different temperature or you suspect it is any of the lumps mentioned above. 2. Choose footwear that does not cause unnecessary pressure in the area. Shoes that have adjustable features like laces can be beneficial to relieving addition pressure. Check out this article on shoes lacing techniques --> https://www.pedorthic.ca/why-lacing-matters/ A visit with a Canadian Certified Pedorthist can shed some light on specific shoe fit and characteristics that will benefit your feet. 3. Off-the-shelf or custom foot orthotics can help to alleviate some pressure and address biomechanical causes of the bump. Consult your Canadian Certified Pedorthist to learn more about orthotic therapy and other pedorthic interventions such as shoe modifications. https://www.pedorthic.ca/

Foot FAQ/Fact Friday How long do orthotics last?/ When should I replace my orthotics? There are a few factors to consider to help you determine if it’s time to ...replace your orthotics yet. How long have you had them? Most orthotics last between 2-5 years, but it will vary depending on their materials, as well as factors like your activity level and weight. The orthotics of a marathon runner will wear out much sooner than the orthotics of a more sedentary individual. Even if your orthotics are made from indestructible materials, feet gradually change over time, so if your orthotics are very old, they might not fit your feet as well as they used to. How do they feel? If your orthotics aren’t as comfortable as they used to be, if your symptoms start coming back, or if you have new symptoms, it’s a good indication that it’s time to replace your orthotics. How do they look? Often you can tell that an orthotic is worn out because it looks worn out. They will usually need to be replaced when components start coming apart, when it looks like the cushioning is worn thin, or if there are cracks in the shells. Have there been changes in your feet? If something has changed the shape of your feet since you got your orthotics, you will probably need to replace them. Foot surgery, injury, and pregnancy are just a few things that can cause changes in your feet. Children with growing feet should replace their orthotics once their feet have grown more than a size or two. Sometimes orthotics will lose a bit of their support or cushioning but might not be completely worn out yet. If that’s the case, your pedorthist may be able to refurbish them by replacing the worn out components. If you think you might need to refurbish or replace your orthotics, contact your Canadian Certified Pedorthist. Visit www.pedorthic.ca

This post is a reminder to all diabetics to please check your footwear and feet daily! This person was in my office today. When he took his shoes and socks off he was shocked to see his toes in this condition. He had no idea how it happened. When I looked in his shoe I found a kinder surprise egg which we figured was there for about a week. He had no sensation it was there due to diabetic neuropathy and with every step it was cutting into his toes. Always check your shoes/ feet daily injuries like this can be prevented
