Bonfield Public Library and Bonfield Seed Lending Library are happy to join in with the Grain Farmers of Ontario to provide What's Growing On!! Seed Kits. These kits are designed to educate Ontario grade school students on where their food comes from , the types of grains grown in Ontario and how plants grow. The kit includes everything you need to grow your own grain plants. For more information visit: https://goodineverygrain.ca/ Please contact the Bonfield Public Library at 705-776-2396 or [email protected] to arrange curbside pick up of your Grain seed starting kits.
Check out an interesting way to start seeds that doesn't require grow lights. https://www.agardenforthehouse.com/20//winter-sowing-101/
It is not just about seed saving but also about harvesting the crops and using them. Here is a great article for how to store your crops without a root cellar. https://www.almanac.com//storing-harvest-without-root-cell
Seeds for next year are slowly coming in. We have peas, radishes, some tomatoes and squash being donated. If you have a few extra seeds from your plants please bring them in to us. We are especially interested in zucchini, beans, cucumber, lettuces, peppers and tomatoes.
If you have cucumbers that are past their picking time still sitting on the vine you can save the seeds if they are from heritage seeds. Check out this link for information on seed saving. https://www.seedsavers.org/grow-cucumber
Hopefully your tomatoes are ripening and you will have a chance to save some seeds for next years crop. If you have a few extras to share, please drop them by the Bonfield Public Library for us to add to the Seed Catalogue. https://permaculturenews.org/2014/07/08/save-tomato-seeds/
Seeds are slowly being returned to the Lending Library. If you a few seeds to donate please bring them into the Bonfield Public Library. You can also drop them in the Library dropbox if the Library isn't open. Please label the seed with the name, Variety, whether it is organic, and where it was grown (either your name or the town name).
Reviews on Salt Springs Laurel's Frilly Kale are in. It is a wonderful kale that has lasted from spring and is still going without getting bitter. Young leaves are tender with the older leaves great for steaming and stewing. Come check it out as a fall crop.
