A history of The Bookshelf’s connection to the wide world of bookselling, publishing and the evolution of technology in the book industry through the experience of Bookshelf founder Doug Minett. The show comprehensively explores the early 1970’s-last week. 2020. Wow! What a ride! It started off with the completion of our elevator and excitement for our accessible cinema and Ebar. Early 2020 was full of hope for the future of books, music, film and food at 41 Quebec street. Then we received the news about the virus and had to pivot our business to internet, and phone orders. Luckily, we completed the buy button on our website the week before the first lockdown in March. We would like to sincerely thank our customers for supporti...ng us through 2020. Your support has made it possible for us to envision a time when we will open our doors and elevator to book lovers, cinema goers, and music and performance lovers alike. Although we would like to do this after the holidays, we are going to have to put off our grand reopening off for a bit longer. The Bookshelf will be going into lockdown mode starting after Christmas. We have done this before and we made it work with your generous support. Although nothing can beat the in store book browsing experience, we plan on packing our website with lots of interesting stuff. Stay tuned for our 2020 Bookshelf Best Sellers, hot books for 2021, In house podcasts, and lots of other fun stuff! During the 28 day lockdown, we will be open from 11-6 daily for phone and internet orders for curbside pick up and free delivery in Guelph. We will never forget the support that our staff and customers have shown us this year. Stay safe, enjoy the books, games, puzzles, and wine! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! The Bookshelf Team

The Bookshelf 11.10.2020

The fall of 2020 is stacking up to be one of the best seasons for books in recent memory. It feels like yesterday that we closed our doors, and operated a curbside pick up and delivery model. Our store has been open to the public since September 8th and it is full of fascinating new books. Shop local in store or online. Free, same day delivery in Guelph. Thank you for helping sustain our family business for over 47 years! Here are a few of our favourites. Stay tuned for more great titles. 2020 is the year of the book! Check out www.bookshelf.ca for details.

A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspectivethe story of one man’s bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of hope and change, and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how livi...ng in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible. This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama’s conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day. #barackobama #apromisedland #getyourcopytomorrow
