In response to the outbreak of COVID-19 the US Department of Treasury and Internal Revenue Service have announced a number of measures to support the economy, including extending the deadline to file and pay taxes until July 15. Unfortunately, these announcements have little impact for US citizens in Canada, who automatically get the extension in ordinary times, and rarely have any US tax to pay, assuming proper tax planning. Similarly, additional paid leave and tax credit provisions are unlikely to impact US citizens who work or operate businesses in Canada concludes cross-border tax lawyer Jonah Spiegelman. Estate planning lawyer Isabel Romeral predicts that in 2020 we will see individuals looking for estate planning options beyond a conventional Will. The aging population is seeking more flexibility in how their assets are transitioned to the next generation. Alter Ego Trusts and Joint Partner Trusts, which are available to individuals aged 65 or older, are becoming a central component of many estate plans. #estateplanning #wealthplanning #2020trends

Wondering what legal trends you may expect in 2020? Our litigation lawyer, Roshni Veerapen, projects that in the new decade we will see the continued development of the law of internet defamation. Inappropriate or at times, criminal internet activity, will result in an increase in the number of claims made for businesses losses and personal injury. At this point, defamation claims and resultant losses are difficult to establish, but as these cases become more frequent, the courts will have no choice but to grapple with the complex legal landscape of social media defamation and internet privacy in the era of keyboard warriors. #litigation #defamation #onlinereputation #privacy
