Today is the day! We're holding our first public snowshoe clinic of the year. Learn basic snowshoeing techniques as you trek over the snowy trails of Pearce Estate Park. Play games along the way to discover how Alberta's wildlife survive the winter. There's still time to book for the afternoon session at 1:30 pm. Suitable for all ages (snowshoes fit child size 4 and up).

This Saturday (Nov 21) is #WorldFisheriesDay! To celebrate we're offering FREE fish feedings with Discovery Centre admission. Buy your ticket online to the Discovery Centre and Fish Hatchery for Nov. 21 and use the promo code WORLDFISH to receive the Fish Feeding for free. Please note that there are maximum capacities in the Discovery Centre. Book online to secure your spot. At the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery and the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery, Fisheries Technicians raise ove...r two million trout every year to stock into over 200 waterbodies throughout the province. This helps to take the angling pressure off the native fish populations like the westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout. If you catch a rainbow trout in Alberta, there's a good chance it came from one of these two provincial fish hatcheries. https://atms.alberta.ca/bhs/Selection.aspx?item=471 See more

Bats do not make good pets. They are wild animals that need natural diversity in the food, water, shelter and space resources that are essential to their survival. Wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the province may have orphaned or injured bats as patients. These animals are cared for temporarily with the goal of releasing them in the wild. #BatWeek
Did you know that we have a #GiftShop full of educational items focused on connecting you and your family with nature? Come check it out!

All trees enter dormancy in the winter. Dormancy is a little bit like hibernation the tree’s metabolism (internal processes) slows down and the tree doesn’t consume much energy. It stops growing and its sap becomes very thick and syrupy. Trees avoid freezing by producing antifreeze proteins and by having air spaces in their outer bark, which acts like insulation. These adaptations give the tree a freezing point lower than the environment.
Calling all environmental stewards! We are hosting a volunteer recruitment and information session for our volunteer program on Nov 19. This is the first step to become a BHS volunteer and only happens twice a year so you will not want to miss it. Check out http://bowhabitat.alberta.ca/visit/volunteer.aspx for volunteer position profiles and time commitments.
Bats are one natural type of pest control. Alberta’s bat species all feed on insects including mosquitos beetles, moths and more! Bats use a lot of energy for flight. A single bat can eat up to 8,000 insects in a single night. Find out more on our Facebook & Instagram stories this week! (pictured - Big brown bat.) #BatWeek
Five of Alberta’s nine species of bats are listed as sensitive or threatened. Help Alberta's bats! Increase populations of native plants, which support native insect populations that bats feed on. Maintain natural and manmade wetlands. Retain mature trees as safe roosting spaces, or install bat boxes in your community. Follow cave closures and restrictions to prevent the spread of WNS to hibernation grounds.... Learn more about bats. Bats of Alberta by Alberta Community Bat Program will be shown in our Nature Theatre all week long. If you can’t make it down to watch this flick on the big screen, check it out online. https://www.albertabats.ca/audiovisual/
It’s #BatWeek! There over 1,400 species of bats in the world, and nine of them can be found in Alberta. There is even one type of bat hiding in our Discovery Centre a bat stuffy, not a live bat. Spot it during your visit this week and let our staff know to win a wild prize. We also have bat stuffies for sale in our gift shop, if you wanted to take home a bat of your own.

It’s Bat Week! Bats are flying mammals, meaning they are more closely related to humans than they are birds. Bat wings are like your hands they have the same bones in their fingers as we do. Their bones are elongated and have a membrane between them, creating a wing. Bats even have a thumb with a claw that sticks out the top of their wing and is used for climbing.
Earlier this month we asked you to send us your questions about bats. We'll be sharing the answers to those questions through our social media pages (check out our Facebook & Instagram stories all week!), starting with this short video. This video features Susan from the Alberta Community Bat Program. Check out the answers to the following questions: Are there any bugs that bats WON'T eat? How can I help bats? Why do bats have hairless wings while the rest of their bodies are covered in hair?
Are you afraid things that go bump in the night? Learning more about the animals that are ‘bumpin’ all night long is one way to face your fears. Celebrate #BatWeek with us as we investigate Alberta's bats! Tune into our stories to learn alongside experts from @AlbertaCommunityBatProgram.
