I have been using Computer Assisted Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy since computers were huge and on wheels, and so it might be normal to get a little jaded. Most cases are ones that I can say to myself, "I have seen this before." Recently, a young boy was brought to me with a genetic disorder known in only 200 people world wide. When I first saw him, the child was almost impossible to scan. He was wild, irate, non-verbal, self-abusive. His attention was nil. It really felt ...tragic to me, like there was nothing I could offer. I told the parents, he was not a candidate for what I do. He could not sit still, pay attention, or even keep the cap on his head to do the training. The parents persisted, begged, said they did not care if there was not any result, they just wanted to try. They were aware of another case that CACR had helped. I acquiesced, and said we would try. The first sessions were either comic or stuff of nightmares. Getting him capped and gelled and sitting in front of the screen was a three person effort. After two sessions he calmed down, by the third he was sitting in the chair ready for the appointment before it started. Now he is sitting 30 mins straight through, he is visibly calmer, attentive and sleeping more soundly. Times like these, I say to my self, the entire world needs to know about what we do. My field is still small, but it is growing and I am just spreading the word. There is an alternative to meds, therapy and suffering. It does not cure everything nor does it help everyone. It is not a miracle, it takes time and work. But, CACR really does offer a new alternative and hope. If you want to help, start asking your doctor for it, demand your insurance provider cover the cost, mention it to your legislator. We are seeing more and more insurance companies accept it, more universities supporting the effectiveness and doctors wanting to know more. Our field does not have trillions of dollars in advertising, lobbyists in Washington or international recognition. We only depend on the people we help to spread the word. See more
