Just a reminder for any physios that follow me. I’ll be speaking on Long Covid in a week’s time. It is vital that we are aware of Long Covid, and that we understand our role. We are facing a tsunami of individuals left with symptoms and they will find their way to your clinic. I will be focusing on identifying treatable traits and safety - it is extremely important we recognize post viral fatigue/post exertional malaise in patients, as well as providing useful resour...ces to help you stay informed. #longcovid #covid_19 #physiocanhelp #physiotherapy #postviralfatigue #postexertionalmalaise #stoprestpace #breathewell

I dont normally post things like this, but I do feel that if something like this helps just one other person out there, it might be worth it. I received an email from a gentleman who purchased a POWERbreathe Plus inspiratory muscle trainer. He wrote: Ive been using this since May, and it is the closest thing to a magic bullet Ive seen in many years of consistently exercising. Resting pulse and blood pressure have both lowered quite a bit. Ive gotten better results... faster than with any other method. Before using it, despite all the exercise I was doing, BP and HR were [high]. Breathing during both strength training and aerobic work is easier and recovery is faster. I do the recommended routine if 30 breaths when I get up, and 30 at bedtime. It only takes a few minutes each day to get surprising results. So great to hear that adding something as simple a inspiratory muscle training can make such a big difference! Ive linked the article that got this fellow into this in my bio. #breathe #breathewell #inspiratorymuscletraining #imt #powerbreathe #diaphragm #diaphragmaticbreathing #bloodpressurecontrol

This is a bit of an older article, and it does have some good tips in it including nose breathing and doing Inspiratory muscle training. However, Id recommend using @bradcliffbreathing s breathing rhythms for activity: a longer exhale than inhale. Rather than 2:2 or 4:4 (one breath per stride), a 2:3 or 3:4 (in for two steps, out for 3). This avoids breath stacking that leads to chest tightness and shortness of breath. Of course, if you struggle with breathing dur...ing activity, its best to seek out individual help from a health professional with respiratory knowledge to make sure there isnt something more going on than just breathing coordination issues! #breathe #breathewell #bradcliffbreathing #thescienceofbreathingwell #breathingretraining #breathingexercises #physiocanhelp #physiotherapy #running #diaphragm #inspiratorymuscletraining #powerbreathe

So very pleased to see this case study! People with IPF can definitely benefit from pulmonary rehab that uses a combination of aerobic, strength and respiratory muscle training! #Repost @powerbreatheuk with @make_repost A new study, published in Physical Exercise and Chronic Diseases Prevention uses the POWERbreathe IMT device for the Inspiratory Muscle Training part of the combined training program for a sedentary 56-year-old man with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)..., finding: "The results of this study show that a systematic and supervised combined (aerobic + resistance + inspiratory) training can maintain functionality and quality of life in an IPF patient. Additionally, strength training can be maintained for as long as necessary without causing SpO2 drops. These results also suggest that, in the event of needing a lung transplant, maintaining muscle strength during the pre-surgical period can be key in the patients recovery during the immediate post-surgical period." Now that masks will be mandatory indoors for #calgary I thought Id repost this for those that are apprehensive about wearing them. Take time now, at home, to get used to the sensation. Remember, there is no build up of carbon dioxide, you dont get less oxygen, it simply provides a slight increase is resistance to breathing. This make it seem like breathing is compromised, but its not! We are incredibly adaptable - sometimes it just takes practice!

I just cant take a deep enough breath. Still the most common thing I hear in my practice. Whether the person has asthma or COPD or no known reason for it, everyone seems to feel like their breathing isnt enough. Breathing can sometimes be complex, and is tied to emotional state as well as our own beliefs about breathing. Many people with this complaint keep taking deeper and deeper breaths to try to resolve the problem, but end up making it worse. Although breathin...g is automatic, we can easily interfere and manipulate it to try to make it right. Sometimes, we cant make it line up again, which is where respiratory physios (like us!) can help.
