Hop Selection 2020 Edition ~ // Each year we ‘hop’ on planes, trains and automobiles to join thousands of brewers and hop industry professionals for hop harvests around the globe. To say this year’s selection process is unique is a massive understatement. We’re at home. Harvest time and the selection that follows is key for brewers and suppliers as it’s an opportunity to select the best lots from that year’s harvest ensuring the best possible raw ingredients go ...into the upcoming year’s beer. It’s also a time for industry partners and friends to connect. We’re incredibly blessed to work in an industry with a community of such amazing people. There are often hundreds and even thousands of kilometers that separate us, but every September we get to come together, share stories, our ups and downs from the year past. Most importantly we get to raise a glass, together. This year we can’t do that and are unfortunately missing all our friends. We are not in Yakima WA, or the Willamette Valley of OR. We’re not in the Hallertau region of Germany, Saaz in Czech, or the Nelson region of New Zealand. We’re right at home here in Canada soaking up the tail end of summer watching the leaves begin to turn. This is the year of the virtual hop selection. We’re beginning to see the Crop 2020 lots arrive here at Brew Culture so our team is hard at work meticulously analyzing each lot for each varietal trying to select the best of the bunch for our brewers. Over the coming weeks we will have observed, rubbed, and gotten our nose into hundreds of lots of hops from around the globe. Although we can’t be with our friends, in some small way we feel they’re here with us. Let’s hope Crop 2021 we get to raise those glasses together again. Cheers!
