UPDATE: AHS reporting 1155 new cases in Alberta today along with 11 new deaths. (Friday) Alberta reported its highest daily count of the pandemic Thursday, with 1,105 new cases of COVID-19. AHS says there are now 10,382 confirmed active cases which represents 0.0024 percent of Alberta's 4.4 million total population. The most infections are in the Edmonton Zone with 4,388. The Calgary Zone is next with 4,219 active cases. Here in the South Zone there are 540 including 163 here in Lethbridge. AHS says an outbreak has been declared at Fleetwood-Bawden Elementary School in our city with two confirmed cases. The Lethbridge School Division says the school will remain open.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire at a home in the 3300 Block of 29 Street South early Friday morning. A call came in to 911 about 5:30 a.m. Twenty-four firefighters from four stations responded. Upon arrival, crews found flames on the side of the residence and into the attic roof structure. With use of aerial apparatus and ground lines, the fire was under control and extinguished within an hour. There were no injuries reported. The cause is under investigation.

Alberta Health Services says a technical glitch prevented 5,000 people, who tested negative for COVID-19, from getting their results by phone auto dialer or text. AHS says that represents less than 3 percent of the tests conducted in September. Officials say anyone with a positive result from Sept 3rd through the 29th was contacted by phone. They say the problem has been fixed and delayed results are now being delivered.

Our province's chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, says Alberta will not be cancelling Halloween over COVID-19 concerns. The province released a series of guidelines on its website on how trick or treaters and candy handlers can enjoy the night safely. Hinshaw says since the event takes place outside kids are actually safer. If the weather is warm, Hinshaw says people may want to hand out candy outside rather than at their front door. Hinshaw's announcement came as Alberta listed another 173 new cases in the province. They include a new outbreak at the Foothills Hospital where 64 patients and staff have tested positive for the coronavirus. Five people have also died from COVID-19 at the hospital.

Another drug dealer has been taken off of our streets. Lethbridge Police made the bust Wednesday at an apartment in the 900 block of 15th street south. Police seized around 148 grams of fentanyl, 132 grams of meth, 25 grams of crack cocaine and more than $14,000 in cash. The combined value of the drugs is just over $40,000. Twenty-nine-year-old Samantar Hussein of Calgary faces various charges including drug trafficking and drug possession.

Twenty six Albertans have been arrested and charged with online child sexual exploitation. ALERT says in total 63 charges were laid against men in 14 communities including one here in Lethbridge, Sean Giles, 41. The investigation took place between June 20 and September 17, 2020. ALERT says there is no definitive link between the suspects other than the nature of offences which were allegedly committed. A spokesperson from the pop up drug overdose site in Lethbridge says it will continue to operate despite receiving a 300 dollar ticket violating a city bylaw. The group calling itself the Lethbridge Overdose Prevention Society says it will appeal to City Council to have the ticket rescinded. A tent was set up in Galt Gardens last Friday just days after the province revealed our city has the highest per capita rate of opioid overdose deaths in the province.
