Please enjoy another in our Brighton I Remember series. Mark Scanlon, a lifetime Brightonian, and much loved pharmacist, shares his story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i3IfhSFekw
Last week, the community was relieved to learn the Memory Junction property was purchased by Cole's Timber Mart, with a promise from the new owners to restore the exterior of the building. For a glimpse of what this property represents, we invite you to watch our series. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ExG42E9MUM
We're looking forward to learning more about this rare and fascinating book on Brighton's history. Dan Buchanan's research and delivery always makes for an enjoyable and interesting presentation.
Did you know Brighton once had an opera house that attracted quite famous performers of the day? A multi-purpose venue, it also doubled as the town jail and town hall. This photo, part of Bud and Jill Guertin's vintage postcard collection, shows it in its glory. It's the February photo of our annual calendar. On Friday the 13th, 1973, a rogue tornado hit the town, damaging the building beyond repair. Ironically, as the caption indicates, council was meeting in the new chambers, examining tenders for the building's demolition. The clerk sent a tongue-in-cheek letter to bidders advising them, "God got the job."
When Family Day falls during Heritage Week in the middle of a pandemic, we miss friends and relatives a chance to get together. During normal years, Brighton's historians would be prepping for our annual History Open House, which was the last public event held in Brighton before our world changed. This year, we can still get together, catch up on history, and see some familiar faces, all from the comfort and safety of home. As the storm approaches, please take a moment or tw...o to check out our original videos, featuring some of Brighton's best known storytellers. We're producing more Brighton I Remember videos this spring, and hope you enjoy those already completed. Our first profile was Florence Chatten. Watch her video here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTk9ZPRIt8U&t=32s You can find more on YouTube.com by searching Brighton Digital Archives. We'll post more links this week. Enjoy!
Brighton has always supported Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre by organizing its own annual Walk a Mile event. This year, 2020, that event went virtual. Brighton Digital Archives is pleased to have produced the video capturing the event and encourages everyone to consider making a donation to Cornerstone (go to cornerstone northumberland.ca). They are the only women's shelter in Northumberland County and their services have never been more in demand than they are now. #walkmyway
The video shot by Bridgton Digital Archives for the Municipality of Brighton and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes will be posted soon. A great event for a worthy cause. #mywalkmyway
Here is the BDA's Covid 19 office. The video team is doing a walk through of our Walk A Mile In Her Shoes video for launch in Sept. The walk is a fund raiser for Cornerstone that provides shelter and assistance for women and children from a violent home life.
We are producing a short video to record Brighton's participation in "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" which supports women and children impacted by family violence. Here we are just testing some ideas we have been developing. Stay tuned .
