Easter Sunday Sermon Discussion Questions Returning After the Resurrection John 21:1-14 In John 21 the disciples are trying to navigate what life after Jesus resurrection looks like. Do they just go back to their old rhythms of life? Is there any thing different about them because of Jesus resurrection? Has Jesus changed their view of the world in any way?... Bible Text: There are several symbolic elements in the text. What is the significance of: The type of fish and the location they were caught The breakfast fire on the beach The overburdened net not breaking The number 153 of fish (This is not in the sermon several theories exist, but none are certain) Cultural / Personal: In our culture, it is common for people to change careers sometimes multiple career changes in a lifetime. In the ancient world, a career change was very rare. When Jesus first called the disciples to follow him, it was quite the monumental call for them to follow. For the disciples, Jesus death was the loss of the master before their apprenticeship was completed. They did not feel like masters well equipped to do the masters work. Therefore, it seemed logical to return to their first career. Yet, as imperfect and short sighted as they were, Jesus was calling them to continue proclaiming the Kingdom of God. Where in our culture is being a follower of Jesus easy? Where in our culture is it most difficult to follow Jesus? Where do you feel most able to follow Jesus and live according to his Kingdom? Where do you feel unable to faithful follow Jesus and live according to his Kingdom? What words of comfort do you find in this chapter? What words of challenge do you find in this chapter? Does this apply for the church in North America?
