Bring on the Bay 3K Open Water Swim 25.11.2020

Did anyone swim outdoors in Ottawa in November this weekend?

Bring on the Bay 3K Open Water Swim 06.11.2020

The Bring on the Bay Swim committee invites the open water swimming community to consider supporting an important initiative to ensure access by open water swimmers, and all Canadian citizens, to lakes in the National Capital Region that are controlled by the National Capital Commission (NCC). In the latter part of the summer the NCC imposed restrictions on open water swimming in Meech Lake. This move was a response to complaints by residents in the area. The NCC has committe...d to holding a public consultation process over the next several months to find a solution to these issues before the start of the next open water swimming season in 2021. A group of open water swimmers, concerned that access to Meech Lake and other lakes in the region could be in jeopardy, formed the National Capital Open Water Swimmers Alliance (NCOWSA). The goal of the NCOWSA is to liaise with the NCC regarding open water swimming and to prepare written and oral presentations for the upcoming consultations. The NCOWSA committee will represent swimmers and other interested parties to help inform and shape the NCC’s adoption of open water swimming guidelines and best practices. It will be advocating a balanced framework that serves all parties interested in the protection and use of Gatineau Park’s public lakes. NCOWSA has created a Facebook group, website and email address to help reach out to interested parties, as the support of coaches, swimmers and triathletes is vital to this initiative. Please consider supporting NCOWSA and its goal of protecting access to lakes controlled by the National Capital Commission for open water swimming by joining the Facebook group to stay up to date on the issues, current information and progress being made. When NCOWSA participates in the consultations, it will be important to demonstrate significant and widespread support among the swimming and triathlon communities. If NCOWSA is unsuccessful, this may be the thin edge of the wedge that sees swimming in NCC controlled lakes banned for all Canadian citizens, other than Meech Lake for residents only. Please support NCOWSA and feel free to distribute this message throughout your own networks.
