Just a few years ago, many organizations still viewed DevOps more as a promising experiment than as a mainstream approach to software development. Not anymore! In 2019, DORA's (DevOps Research & Assessment) definition of elite performing Software Teams that utilized #DevOps practices... - Execute 208 times as many code deployments - Maintain lead times, from commit to deploy, that are 106 times faster - Report change failure rates that are 7 times lower - Recover from change failures 2,604 times faster DevOps has secured its position as a proven and powerful set of practices and tools, giving teams the ability to make dramatic improvements in their performance and productivity. As a result, a growing number of software development teams are leveraging DevOps to achieve the elite-performance level. I've built a #selfserviceIT DevOps platform for several companies running #vmware and #redhat that improves deployment times and helps IT Teams claim back 25% of their time. Intro to Infrastructure #DevOps 1. Decide to make a 'Movement' and designate a DevOps leader 'Deciding' the outcome, leads to 'Designing' the outcome.... 2. Normalize your Tech Stack This is really important. Get your Senior Sysadmins & Senior Devs in a 'War' room and hammer out the core technologies need i.e. Do you really need: - "Redis & Memcache" - "MongoDB & CouchDB" - "Apache & Nginx" (Sometimes there really is a use-case - but remove as many redundancies as possible) 3. Standardize IT Tools - #OperatingSystem - Choose a Long-term Supported Mainstream Stable Versions - Version control - Use only one - Configuration Management Tool - #Puppet / #Chef / #SaltStack - #Orchestration Tool - #Ansible 4. Design the DevOps Flow Look at where you reuse the same deployment pattern continuously while moving from dev->test->stage->prod 5. Automate Infrastructure Deployment This solves the problem that occurs when the developers throughput outpaces the #IT Ops deployment ability 6. Build #SelfServiceIT Developers can deploy #ondemand, and #ITOps have the ability to clear up their backlog! I've built self-service for several companies and helped IT teams claim back 25% of their time. Look for the link to my strategy guide in the comments. #cio #cto #redhat #vmware #sysadmin

In the face of Covid-19, I’m glad we have a lot of #automation in place that enable us to get us what we need almost #ondemand - Thanks Amazon, for your #selfservice portal to almost everything! At the heart of this automation is #devops According to a DevOps.com report, ‘High-Performance’ DevOps teams are strong in these 5 capabilities:... 1. On-Demand Self-Service 2. Broad Network Access 3. Resource Pooling 4. Rapid Deployment 5. Measured Service If you’re running infrastructure #onpremise, the capability you are probably missing is the "On-Demand Self-Service" designed for end-users like your Development Teams. But does a Self-Service Portal make that big of a difference? I found that when Development Teams had a Self-Service IT Portal, they would be able to deploy code faster and the IT Team became more productive because they eliminated their backlog of repetitive tasks. I've built self-service for several companies and witnessed products and services being released to market faster and the IT team claim back 25% of their time. IT requests that used to take days or weeks, I reduced to 15 mins! If you want to learn more about how you could implement this for yourself, look for the link to my strategy guide in the comments. #cio #cto #redhat #vmware

According to a 2020 Gartner Prediction, 50% of organizations will experience increased collaboration between IT Teams and different internal Business units by 2022. Its hard to believe that so many organizations still work in these 'walled' Silos and only 50% will break them down over the next 2 years. Isn't that insane?! I've actually solved this Silo problem though! AND I did it with no struggle, no controversy, just a whole bunch of IT Automation ;-) ... I’ve implemented Self-Service IT portals for several companies now, bridging the communication of those silos together and claiming back 25% of the IT Teams time. What used to take days or weeks, I reduced to 15 mins!
