Happy Holidays! We’ll be taking a short break for the holidays and send our best wishes for the season, as well as the New Year! The gallery is now closed for the holidays and will reopen at 11 am on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. We are grateful for the dedication of people working in the face of the pandemic, as well as anyone who offered their support to others during this past year. Although there is much to forget about 2020, many different events over these past months have ...restored a lot of my faith in humanity. Stay safe and keep moving forward! UPCOMING EXHIBITION - Tommy Calderón "Untitled N. 01" is on display in our Reading Room Gallery Saturday, November 14th to 21st. Closing reception Saturday November 21st from 2-4pm. Contact the gallery to book your visit! Stephen Bulger Gallery is proud to host our annual exhibition of work judged Best of Show for a Third Year student at Ryerson University’s end of year exhibition. In this selection of images from the series "Untitled N. 01" we explore the existential inquire...s of Tommy Calderón, whose photographs explore the psychological realm, impressions, and manifestations of the self as projected on the real. Exploring the idea of the human condition we are presented with an inner monologue that questions the importance of self. How we perceive the world around us is unique to the individual, and yet something of that experience can be transposed and communicated through photography. This ongoing series acts as a meditation on the link between our spiritual needs and our relation to the metaphysical as expressed through a series of interventions within the physical world. About the Artist: Tommy Calderón is a Toronto-based artist and photographer. Interested in the idea of realities, perception, and the ego, he explores the world in reference to historical non-fiction and the art-historical. A disbeliever in the common narrative, his work attempts to shift the routine of our everyday existence to the cathartic acts of self-reflection and independence. The gallerys third exhibition with Alison Rossiter concentrates on her found photograms, which exist as latent images until they are processed using darkroom chemistry and abstract images are coaxed into surfaces of the various types of photo papers that she has collected from hundreds of sources; some more than 100 years older than the expiration date printed on their packages. The images formed are the result of the organic components of the silver gelatin papers decaying over time. Some are reminiscent of 20th Century art practice while others are arrangements of fingerprints of long deceased photographers, making this project one about archaeology as well as art. This group exhibition that we co-curated with Rare Photo Gallery comprised over 50 vintage prints and concentrated on photographs of North American Indigenous Peoples. Early ethnographic photography is a hybrid of fact and fiction; however, an appreciation for their unique qualities as historical artifacts enables the viewer to move beyond pure exoticism. It also featured many types of early photographic processes and techniques, which served to underscore the evolving nature of what the medium was able to capture and present. S. W. Our second exhibition from the National Geographic Image Collection concentrated on work by Dr. Joseph F. Rock, of his colourful expeditions in the far hinterlands of China during the 1920s. This eccentric Viennese-born botanist spent 27 years in the remote Tibetan borderlands collecting exotic plants and communing with spiritual lamas while dodging warlords and bandits. This exhibition featured vintage B&W photographs, as well as modern enlargements, from his Autochrome orig...inals. His photographs display the vast and mountainous terrain traversed by Rock and provide a glimpse into the manner with which he travelled; surrounded by his extensive library of books and phonograph recordings, dining in his accustomed fashion, and relaxing in his own tub, all of which was carried from place to place by a retinue of locals. Our first solo exhibition by Sanaz Mazinani Frames of the Visible examined the disassociation that occurs between an event and its photographic record. Using destabilizing images of war mined from online news media outlets, she digitally constructs photographic collages that collapse the intimations of the original image, thus creating a new representation of conflict. She explores the relationship between perception and representation by drawing from concepts such as censo...rship, scale, and the body as a site of action or violence. The geometric patterns created by sequentially coupling, repeating, mirroring, and multiplying her source material references Islamic ornamentation, pairing traditional Eastern and contemporary Western image production techniques. Wendy Ewald | Portraits and Dreams On display in our Reading Room Gallery September 8 - October 21, 2020 To schedule a visit please use stephenbulgergallery.appointlet.com or call the gallery at 416.504.0575.... The gallery is honoured and excited to announce its representation of Wendy Ewald. In advance of a larger survey exhibition, were presenting a selection of her work in the Reading Room made in Kentucky, Mexico and Durham, North Carolina, to coincide with the release of Portraits and Dreams, a documentary film she co-directed with Elizabeth Barret, as well as a book of the same title published by MACK Books. For over forty years Wendy Ewald has collaborated in art projects with children, families, women, and teachers in Labrador, Colombia, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Holland, Mexico, and the United States. Starting as documentary investigations of places and communities, Ewalds projects probe questions of identity and cultural differences. In her work with children she encourages them to use cameras to record themselves, their families, and their communities, and to articulate their fantasies and dreams. Ewald herself often makes photographs within the communities she works with and has the children mark or write on her negatives. Thereby challenging the concept of who makes an image, who is the photographer, who is the subject, who is the observer, and who is the observed. In blurring the distinction of individual authorship and throwing into doubt the artists intentions, power, and identity, Ewald creates opportunities to look at the meaning and use of photographic images in our lives with fresh perceptions. Near the end of high school my father had an accident and spent the next 10 years in slow decay. My mom remained active, but in the fall of 2011, she suffered a massive stroke and died within the month. Fausta salvaged old vinyl dolls that had been discarded by girls and boys. Her large and highly detailed photographs enable us to examine their state of decay and address our notions of representation as well as our existence through material objects. I enjoy curating survey exhibitions because you can contrast timeless images with those that encapsulate time. Elliott Erwitt has a trove of great photographs and although he seems to have prowled for some of his photographs, his respect for what hes photographing gives him some creative licence as a voyeur. For Larrys sixth exhibition we thought it would be interesting to isolate a selection of investigations he has made of land and belonging while working on a number of separate projects. Believing that land makes people who they are, and that the loss of land is synonymous with a loss of identity, Towell has engaged with families living in dire conditions in such places as Beirut, the Gaza Strip, South Africa and Afghanistan. Soon after opening my gallery, I was invited to be a guest at le Mois de la Photo Paris in the fall of 1996. I was part of a busload of photography professionals that were toured around the city, seeing many exhibitions, as well as a number of studio visits, all topped off with many fine meals. The work of Gilbert Garcin made a big impression on me, but it wasnt until years later that I was able to secure an exhibition of his work for my gallery. Acting as Everyman and creating rudimentary mise en scne inserted with portraits that he made of himself and his wife Monique, his cleverly constructed photographs use humour to comment on the human condition. Following on the theme of archival collections, the source material for our first exhibition with William Eakin was culled from his collection of vernacular Polaroids. He scans and enlarges specific examples from the original prints, which enables him to highlight the sense of post-war optimism that he discovered within the various images, an optimism he finds inherent in the Polaroid medium itself. The selected images display varying degrees of decay, which are arrested in this second moment of creation. It is this sense of optimism that we have lost in our present situations and Eakin offers the viewer the opportunity to look back, to remember, to share and to honour. I admire obsessive attention to process. For his MFA thesis project, Anthony Koutras continued his practice of creating photographic objects that mimic elements of the public realm and challenge our passive encounters with the everyday. Photographing found objects from all angles provided the images that were assembled, printed and di-cut so they could be folded into rudimentary 3D sculptures. He then photographed the sculptures in front of a black backdrop, which he made prints of that were uniquely sized so that the subject of the photograph was brought back to its original size. Overexploitation of arable land, overgrazing and increasingly deep drilling for water have been factors in the losses, at that time, of 18% of arable land. Benoit chased giant sandstorms through several regions to capture his photographs, and his work earned the inaugural Prix Pictet Prize. Great vintage photographs of Canada are a rare item. Considering the number of photographs made of, and in, Niagara Falls, relatively few were made elsewhere north of the 49th parallel. While reorganizing the gallerys inventory, I saw an interesting exhibition pass in front of my eyes, and arranged photographs by geographical region, as well as one wall devoted to portraits. One of those exhibitions that had something for everyone.
