Central Alberta Quidditch 17.11.2020

Hi folks! This is our update as of today, June 19, 2020. Quidditch is a fantastic and fun team sport. It involves working as a group to catch, throw, hit, run, and grab to play and win the game. While high-level quidditch involves a lot of fitness training, our approach has always been to be recreational and social first, including providing all the equipment to keep the barrier to access for our community as low as possible.... Unfortunately, at this time, what we're seeing is that there isn't a great way to do that type of recreational *and safe* casual quidditch. So, we are not planning to restart quidditch this summer, although we may attempt a few casual get-togethers, depending on guidance we receive from Quidditch Canada and the Government of Alberta, to test out some options for the fall. We are also continuously evaluating everything coming out from various sporting and health organizations to see if we can start our youth and adult programs in September and October safely. We feel fairly optimistic about that, but of course, things can change with relatively short notice, especially as other sports and groups relaunch. Still, planning needs to happen from your side as early as possible, so if we do get to restart, you can expect (as of right now): --- same locations (85 Boyce Street) --- same days and times (Youth on Mondays from 5:30 to 7pm; Adults on Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30pm) --- same length of program (first Monday / Tuesday of September to the end of October) --- about the same cost ($95 for youth, $30 for adults) --- likely changes in tournaments (may not be any), parties (definitely no open / shared food), and practice activities If you have any questions or need more information, or have some ideas you'd like to share with us, please message us here or email [email protected] Stay safe, enjoy the beautiful outdoors, and we hope we see you soon!

Today would have been our first night of youth quidditch for the summer season. We're so sad that we can't run our program. We've been hoping for weeks to at least be able to announce some casual / drop-in activities in July and August but that looks extremely improbable, too. So instead, let's practice our patronus charms while we remember that we can get through this by working together while apart. Share your favourite quidditch memories below, stay active this summer and tell us all about it, and let's plan for the fall.

Maybe video games are more your speed? Apparently the Calgary Lightning (part of Calgary Quidditch Club) are looking for people to play Broomstick League ($15 on Steam) or Quidditch World Cup (online using the Dolphin emulator) with them! If there's interest, Alex Lamoureux may even stream some games for people to watch. Contact them for more information because this sounded like some Muggle Studies 300 level stuff to us.

While we can't be at Quidditch Canada Nationals today, we do all have access to a few online options. First up, an online Wrock Show (wizard rock ... Harry Potter filk songs) at OWL Fest. If you enjoy quidditch in part because you enjoy Harry Potter, this could be a great way to remember the best parts of the series while watching very creative artists around the world.

In case you missed our evening announcement, just a quick reminder for you. Stay safe, stay physically isolated as much as you can, and catch up on old quidditch film with all your internet friends (our channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzneR7ovpuWZ6WnJv6OaFjQ ).
