Grocery store produce pepper seeds sprouted in a sandwich bag on damp paper towel. Looks like it will be a potting up day. #hortmember #yycgardens #yycgardening #yycgardener #yycgardenshowiscoming

Brought the table centrepiece made December 23 outside. Almost all the greens still were soft and flexible. Removed the hurricane lamp and decorations, added greens and berries from another centrepiece, gave it some interest with dry sea holly from the garden...add a dusting of snow and it’s a beautiful outdoor arrangement. #hortmember #yycnow #yycgardener #yycgardens #yycgarden #seaholly

This is why you shouldn’t totally clear out the garden in the fallwinter interest. Doesn’t the frost look beautiful on the hops? The birds are enjoying the dry vines as cover and for perching while waiting for their turn at the feeder. #hortmember #yycgarden #yycgardener #yycgardening #yycgardens #yycnow #yycplants #plantsofyyc

The amaryllis is looking so lovely this morning...and there are more blooms to come. Plants that flower at this time of year are beautiful gifts. #hortmember #yycgardener #yycgardening #yychouseplants #plantsofinstagram #plants #amaryllis #thankful

Made the @atcoblueflame kitchen garlic dark chocolate truffles, featured in today's CalHort Yyc Gardener's Corner e-news, using Russian Red Garlic from @parklandpeonies and almond milk. The milk makes a softer truffle. When using such a strong flavourful garlic try using half the amount of garlic. There's a balsamic drizzle on the truffles which gives the shiny dot on top. Oh, the rosemary pictured is from a plant being overwintered under grow lights. If you are interested in receiving gardening news by email, sign up for our weekly Gardener's Corner e-news https://bit.ly/3mFnHMn. You can read back issues on our website (https://www.calhort.org/resources/our-publications/) Happy growing!

In case you were wondering... the blood-veined sorrel survived it’s over-night in a bucket of soapy water and repotting treatment for mealybugs and aphids. Three weeks later, the old leaves have died off and have been replaced with new. #yycgarden #yycgardening #yycgardens #hortmember #yycgardener #indoorgardening #indoorplants #wintergardening

The cactus spines were glowing in the light yesterday morning. It’s a benefit of the low sun angle at this time of year. #hortmember #yycgardening #yycgardens #yycgarden #yycgardener

The fun visuals to be found when you maintain a bird feeder in the garden. In the spring, seedlings need protection but the bird are good pest controllers. #hortmember #yycgardener #yycgardening #yycgardens #yycgarden #yycbirds

Snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum) is still looking fresh in the garden this afternoon. It may seem like winter, but there still are little green treats to be found. #hortmember #yycgarden #yycgardener #yycgardening #yycgardens #smallpleasures #cerastiumtomentosum

The Viburnum trilobum berries were glowing like mini lights this week in the Society’s garden. A visual treat before they become bird food. Viburnum provided year-round interest. This one, American high bush cranberry, grows to 3 m tall. Do you grow viburnum? #hortmember #yycgardens #yycgardening #yycgarden #yycgardener #viburnum

This is one of the vividly coloured yarrows (achillea) as it goes to seed. It still has beautiful colour as it dries. A plant to consider growing if you’re looking for late season colour and winter interest. #hortmember #yycgardens #yycgardener #yycgardening #yycgarden #yycplants

It’s amazing...Still harvesting yellow wax beans. Why are they still vibrant? They were planted in deck rail pots. A low of 7 C or less and they were moved into the garage. It took them a while to get started but this warm fall has extended the harvest. #harvest #growyourownfood #hortmember #yycgarden #yycgardening #yycgardens #yycgardener #yycgardeners

Lovely fall colour on the Northwest poplar (Populus x jackii 'Northwest')this morning. The leaves may not make a great mulch, but when dry and crumbled, can be a good addition of brown material to a compost. In moments like this, with a bold blue sky, they shine. #hortmember #yycgardens #yycgardening #yycgardens #yycgardener #fall #fallcolours
