Boozhoo/Hello Janelle here, owner of Calm ‘n Scents. Calm ‘n Scents is open for business Tuesday - Saturday from 10-5. ... Much of the business community knows one another and I’m sure you’ve seen many businesses close permanently due to the covid lockdowns. Tomorrow some will close and some will remain open, despite the restrictions. These businesses have their livelihoods on the line to make a stand and they have my support. The top down approach isn’t the best way to work together through this. I believe people want to maintain a safe business for people to visit and still serve the community. Perhaps you haven’t lost as much as a small business has. For that, I celebrate your blessing with you. However, that’s not the situation for many. The support to shop local this past year has been a beautiful momentum to witness and experience. Thank you Sarnia Lambton!!! I’m posting this to encourage the support of these businesses and in hopes that our elected officials advocate for us! This doesn’t have to evolve to fines. If we’re truly all in this together, then include small businesses in the decision making.
Orange Shirt Day Orange shirt day is a day of remembering and honouring all the First Nation children that were taken from their families and communities and placed in residential schools. The first Indian Residential Schools in Canada opened in the 1870’s. The last residential school in Canada closed in 1996. Many children never made it home.... They weren’t allowed to practice ceremony or speak their language. If they did, there were harsh repercussions. As a result of residential schools and the forced assimilation of my people, I’m like many others that grew up without culture. Smudging wasn’t something that I participated in while growing up. I didn’t know the teachings. I remember the first time that I did. I was around 10 years old. There was a community gathering in Aamjiwnaang at the old community centre parking lot and I remember everyone being in a circle. The smudge bowl was going around. I watched everyone take turns and my siblings passing. When the smudge bowl circled to me, I smudged. It felt good. It soothed my spirit. I kind of felt like a rebel because smudging wasn’t encouraged. I wondered why when I smudged it gave me the same feeling as prayer did. I grew up in the church and our family didn’t grow up traditional with our cultural teachings. I struggled with my identity as an Anishinabe Kwe until I reconnected to ceremony. When I see a young person struggling or embarrassed of who they are as Anishinabe, I just want to cry. I know that feeling. Lack of self love and self acceptance among First Nation People is a result of residential schools. When you see a First Nation Person I hope you also see the resiliency in their bloodline. I also hope you hold space for First Nation People to practice their culture. We weren’t allowed to for many years. Because I wasn’t able to smudge or practice my culture, I share my teachings with all that walk through the door at Calm ‘n Scents. I appreciate the teachings shared with me by customers from all different walks of life. Let’s remember those children and the commitment to respect and allow space for First Nation culture.
