February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their communities. In recognition of this month, the Camosun Library and guest-curator N.P. (Nyasha) Katedza have created a resource guide of books and films created by Black artists. Each Dec. 6, Camosun pauses to recognize the anniversary of the murders of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. We remember the victims, while reaffirming that justice and inclusion is something that we believe in, and work towards, every day of the year. Camosun believes that our campuses and our country should be safe and supportive for everyone. We’re not there yet as a society, but we’re working together to achieve this. We believe that our actions and policies inspire hope for a better future. On Dec. 6, flags at both Camosun campuses will be flown at half-mast, in recognition of Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. We commit to working to prevent gender-based violence and to build inclusive, strong and safe communities for everyone.

Congrats to three recent grads from Camosun's Medical Radiography diploma program who received the 2020 Governor General’s Collegiate Bronze Medal for their perfect grades! On Nov. 19, the Provincial Health Officer announced further restrictions as COVID-19 cases continue to escalate and concerns grow about community spread. The new provincial orders significantly reduce social interaction and travel. The new COVID-19 health orders impact students and employees at Camosun: * Active health checks (daily screenings) are now mandatory for everyone coming on campus. * Masks are mandatory in all indoor public settings and in all workplaces for shar...ed work areas and where physical distancing can’t be maintained. * Employees are encouraged to work remotely wherever possible. Educational activities that support student learning and development will continue as they are exempt from the suspension of events and gatherings. We continue to review and respond to the new orders. We will share updates in the days and weeks ahead as new information becomes available. We warmly congratulate Camosun staff member, Naji Yazdi, on receiving the Intercultural Trust Award from the Government of British Columbia at the recent 2020 BC Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism awards! These awards recognize excellence in fostering inclusiveness and anti-racism efforts. Naji was recognized for his volunteer work with the United Way of Greater Victoria and the Iranian-Persian Cultural Society. By day, Naji works in Camosun’s culinary arts department. In his a...cceptance speech, Naji read a letter that he wrote to his five-year-old son, after he came home from pre-school and talked about being called different because of the colour of his hair. Here’s an excerpt of Naji’s letter, wise words for people of all ages: My son, the colour of people’s hearts and souls are more important than the colour of their skin or the colour of their hair or the colour of their eyes. Be aware of cultural differences just for using that knowledge toward being a good friend, a warm host and for being a nice human. "My dear son, treat your friends the way that you like to be treated. This practice alone will make you a trustworthy friend, a nice-to-work-with colleague, and eventually a respected leader. Love others and respect everyone wholeheartedly. This makes you loveable.

This week, the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) announced that they've cancelled the 2020/21 athletic season. This decision impacts our Camosun College Chargers, Camosun's five varsity sport programs, which include men's and women's basketball and volleyball, and men's golf. We're disappointed by this news, but we support our student-athletes in every way possible and stand by our commitment to prioritize the health and safety of the college community.
