Curling during COVID. Screening at the door, chairs set 2 metres apart in the lounge, one sweeper and masks everywhere. Everyone misses the social aspects of the game and postgame chatting, but are thrilled to have a safe activity in which to participate.

Curling is going well because of the mountain of volunteers, making ice, doing COVID screening, fogging after every draw. We know lots of people are wanting to get back to the gym. Unfortunately the staffing needed for COVID protocols make it prohibitive at this time. We have applied for a grant and if we get it, the gym will open in April. Fingers crossed! We know lots of people are wanting to get back to the gym. Yes, we are re-opening. All leagues will resume as of Tuesday, February 16. Barry threw down a flood yesterday, so the ice will be top notch. A huge thank you to Barry and Ken for all their work. This would not be possible without you.

Looking for more curlers! We are opening up registration for curlers to join our leagues in January. The cost is pro-rated to be equal to what those who have already registered are paying $310, including tax to curl from January 4 until April 16. COVID protocols are in effect to keep our members safe. Registration deadline is December 15. Join one or more leagues and have some fun this winter. Call 653-4433 or email [email protected]

Another great sponsor! Thanks to John and Bev Hutchinson and Warkworth Golf Course for sponsoring a set of our new circles. They have always been generous in donations to bonspiels, and once again threw in their support when this new promotion was proposed.

Sweeping There is to be one sweeper only on each rock thrown. Sweeping is allowed from delivery hog line until all rocks come to a halt. In all cases, there is no sweeping of the opposition’s rocks. In four-person games, there is no sweeping by either skip on any rock. (Or vice-skip when they are holding the broom.)... In the two-person game, only the throwing team’s skip can sweep from the hog line until all rocks come to a halt. The idle skip cannot sweep any rock.

On Ice Protocols Physical Distancing (6 feet/2 metres). What’s that look like on the ice? Grab your broom by the end of the handle and extend your arm out straight. That’s about six feet. Swing around in a circle and that’s the space you need. According to our Public Health Unit, this is the most important rule to follow. The leads will determine who has hammer, so bring your own coin to toss or do rock, paper, scissors. They will then each sanitize the handles of the ...rocks for their team and then proceed to their designated positions. Do not congregate at the back boards when coming on and leaving the ice. Enter and leave with 6 feet/2M between you and the next person. Skips will immediately proceed directly to the target end. Seconds and Vice-Skips will go immediately down ice. Once hammer is decided they will proceed to their designated positions. No physical contact before, during or after the game. No handshakes, fist-pumps or high-fives. All skips and vice-skips when in the house must stay 6 feet/2M apart. Each player is responsible for selecting their own rock for play and must not touch other rocks. If other rocks need to be moved, use a broom to push them. At the completion of the end, only one player from each team should move their team’s rocks to the back boards. All others should stay distanced. Just because you are wearing a mask does not mean you can be closer than 6 feet/2M. See more

The Meyers Sports Club presented Ron Hart with a Special Recognition award on November 2nd, in recognition of his work with youth curling. Ron has volunteered with the junior curling program for 10 years. He not only spent time every Sunday with them, but took teams to bonspiels around the area and to playoffs in Ottawa. A big thank you to Ron for his dedication to young curlers.

Here I how sweeping will work in COVID times: There is to be one sweeper only on each rock thrown. Sweeping allowed from delivery hog line until all rocks come to a halt. In all cases, there is no sweeping of the opposition rocks.... In 4 person games, there is no sweeping by either skip on any rock. (Or vice-skip when holding the broom.) We all know skips could never sweep anyway. In the 2-person game, only the throwing team skip can sweep from the hog line until all rocks come to a halt. The idle skip cannot sweep any rock.

Here is a video of what curling will be like in 2020. It is like a dance on ice as players stay distanced from each other. We can do this and be safe! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_KjKuUDbxQ

The Club closed very suddenly in March, but he voting for Volunteer of the Year had been going on for a couple of weeks. Normally, the presentation would take place at the yearly banquet in April, but of course that didn’t happen either. On October 19 the joint boards recognized the winner of Volunteer of the Year. Gord Reid has not only been the president of CDCRC, where he has put in an amazing amount of time, but also has done many improvements around the club. He personally installed new, energy efficient lights throughout the building and on the ice surface. You have probably seen him up on a ladder somewhere in the club over the last year. Congratulations to Gord Reid...Volunteer of the Year.

Everyone wants to know "What is happening about curling in Campbellford?" The Boards have met twice trying to decide if it is safe for our members to curl with the upswing of cases of COVID in Ontario. All of the protocols have been approved by the Health Unit, but we want our members to feel and be safe. So the final decision has been postponed until October 19th, when the situation will be reviewed. Thank you for your patience.
