When shopping for a new toothbrush, look for one with soft bristles. Some people assume that medium or hard bristles provide more cleaning power, but they can end up damaging your gums and enamel. Soft bristles are gentler on your teeth and gums and the bristles are flexible, making it easier to clean under the gumline.

Whitening trays are a great option for safely whitening your teeth. We custom-make trays for your mouth so they won’t shift or leak, which reduces the risk of gum irritation. Ask us about teeth whitening at your next visit.

Many everyday things can cause teeth to change colour cigarettes, red wine, coffee, certain medications and teeth naturally change colour as we age because the outer enamel layer becomes thinner. Ask us about options to keep your teeth looking healthy and bright.

Dentures need to be cleaned daily in order to maintain good oral hygiene. Remove and rinse your dentures after eating to remove bits of food and prevent staining. Then use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your mouth and remove any adhesive (if you use it). Once a day, soak them in non-abrasive denture cleanser and gently scrub them with a soft-bristled brush. Overnight, keep your dentures moist by soaking them in warm or cool water or a mild denture solution. Rinse them thoroughly in the morning before putting them back in. Any questions about cleaning your dentures? We’re always here to help!

When a child loses a primary tooth prematurely, it’s important to see us. Primary teeth play an essential role in the alignment of permanent teeth. If a child loses a tooth too early, a permanent tooth may erupt before it’s ready to fill the space. This might cause problems later on if it’s not the right tooth for the space. We can assess the growth and, in some cases, suggest the use of a space maintainer until the adult teeth are ready to erupt.

Storing a toothbrush out in the open especially near the toilet exposes it to airborne germs and bacteria. Instead, store your toothbrush standing up inside a cabinet so that the water can drain in between brushings and it’s a little more protected.

Do you know what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth? Its important to act quickly. Pick it up carefully and hold it by the top of the tooth not the root and store it in a container of milk, and if you dont have milk, use saliva or water. Dont rinse the tooth or let it dry out. Call us right away for further instructions. (519) 973-7000

Ever wondered the difference between a dental bridge and an implant? Dental bridges replace a missing tooth by attaching the bridge to the surrounding teeth using crowns or wings. They are a lower-cost solution and a good option if the patient has experienced bone loss where the tooth is missing. However, bridges cannot prevent further bone loss. They can cause strain on the neighbouring teeth and may need to be replaced periodically. A dental implant is a titanium screw pla...ced in the bone with an abutment and crown attached. The implant integrates with the bone for a stronger, more natural functionality and can prevent bone loss. Because it stands alone, it doesnt cause strain on the neighbouring teeth. A dental implant is also a longer-term solution for missing teeth with many implants lasting a lifetime. However, implants cost more than bridges and sometimes are not covered by insurance. Deciding between the two options can be tricky, so we offer to review all information with patients and look at any insurance policies to help them make an informed decision. Dental checkups are an essential part of maintaining good oral health. First, we remove stains and build-up on teeth above and below the gumline. Then we look for signs of tooth decay and gum disease, check the bite and jaw for problems, evaluate any new risk factors such as a change in medication, conduct an oral cancer screening, assess problem areas, and make recommendations for further treatment. Sometimes this involves taking a closer look with a dental X-ray. We also demonstrate proper cleaning techniques or provide tips to help patients reach any problem areas when brushing and flossing at home. Call us today to book a dental checkup (519) 973-7000!

Brushing too hard can wear away enamel. To get the right amount of pressure, try to imagine youre brushing a tomato. If you brush too hard youll strip the tomato of the skin. Light pressure will keep your teeth and the tomato clean and intact.

At Campus Dental Centre, we offer night guards to help protect tooth enamel from the damage caused by bruxism (tooth grinding). Our guards are custom fit for your mouth to help absorb the force of your bite and change behaviour. Ask us if you have any questions about teeth grinding!

Campus Dental Centre 07.07.2020

People sometimes think sports guards are only needed for contact sports like lacrosse, hockey, rugby or martial arts, but athletes playing non-contact sports need protection as well. If theres a risk of getting hit in the mouth or jaw like baseball, basketball or soccer, or a risk of falling like skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding, then a sports guard is a good investment. Custom sports mouthguards are more durable and last longer than store-bought guards. We take an impression of the mouth and specially make each guard for a better fit. That means the guard is more comfortable - and more likely to be worn! Ask us about custom mouthguards today. Call (519) 973-7000.

It only takes 24-36 hours for plaque to harden into tartar. Once plaque becomes tartar, it is bonded to the tooth enamel and only a dental professional can remove it. However, flossing once a day, every day can help prevent plaque from hardening into tartar.

Nail biting is one of those habits you probably never realized affects your teeth. Not only can chewing chip a tooth but prolonged nail biting places the jaw in a protruded position, putting pressure on the jaw and may cause dysfunction. Here are 5 tips to help break the habit: 1. Cut your nails short or have your nails professionally manicured. 2. Keep your hands busy with something else knit, click a pen or squeeze a stress ball. ... 3. Chew sugar-free gum. 4. Practice stress-relief strategies like meditation. 5. Notice what triggers you to bite your nails and brainstorm ways to cope. See more

We all know that sugary snacks are bad for your teeth, but do you know how to identify high-sugar content using the product labels? Sugar goes by many names, including corn syrup, corn sweeteners, dextrose, fructose, glucose, sucrose, honey, maple syrup, and molasses. A quick rule of thumb is to avoid foods that list any form of sugar as the first ingredient. Choosing options with lower sugar content will help to keep you and your teeth healthy.

***Update on COVID-19*** This has been a very difficult time for all of us and many of you have been forced to wait for dental care. We deeply appreciate your understanding while we have kept our office closed to help control the spread of the coronavirus. Please be advised with the extension of Premier Doug Fords State of Emergency to June 2, 2020, and the recommendations set out by the regulatory body of Ontario Dentists, all dental offices throughout Ontario will remain ...closed for routine dental care due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, please remember we are still here for you for Emergency and Urgent Care! Our practice is still closed, so please do not show up at our office for any reason without first calling and making arrangements with our administrative team and/or the dentist over the phone, as we will need to conduct a telephone screening prior to seeing any patients in the office. We are truly sorry again for any inconvenience this may cause but the safety of our patients, our team, and our community is of utmost importance to us. We look forward to serving you on a regular schedule as soon as possible. Thank you once again for your understanding.
