Canada and Vietnam met virtually for the first annual Bilateral Defence Consultations. Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy) Peter Hammerschmidt, of Canada's Department of National Defence, met with his counterpart, Lieutenant-General Vu Chien Thang, Director-General of the Foreign Relations Department of Vietnam's Ministry of Defence, to discuss bilateral defence co-operation. These consultations allowed to take stock of the bilateral relationship's positive devel...opment and begin charting a course for defence co-operation over the next three years in areas including peace support, maritime security and military training. It was a landmark event in defence relations between and . We look forward to continuing to strengthen our ties, steadily and sustainably, through a broad range of bilateral and multilateral activities. As a #Pacific nation, #Canada is committed to being a predictable, reliable and meaningful contributor to Asia-Pacific security and one that acts in the interests of the rules-based international order and global peace and security. STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE GLOBAL CONFERENCE FOR MEDIA FREEDOM On 16 November, Canada and Botswana co-hosted the second Global Conference for Media Freedom under the theme Media freedom in the time of COVID-19 #defendmediafreedom. Participants included journalists, governments, media organisations and civil society, all committed to protecting journalists and promoting the health of the global information ecosystem. Alongside the Conference, the UK and Canada co-chai...red the first Ministerial meeting of the Media Freedom Coalition, bringing together 40 governments committed to media freedom and the protection of journalists. The first UK/Canada Media Freedom Award for 2020 was awarded to the Belarus Association of Journalists. Independent media are essential to a functioning society, for instance playing a vital role in the international COVID-19 response. They also provide a foundation for economic prosperity and social development. When everyone is able to debate ideas without fear of persecution, the whole of society benefits, stimulating innovation, creativity and progress. The UK and Canada believe that people must be able to discuss and debate issues freely, to challenge their governments, and to make informed decisions, supported by access to information provided by a strong, robust and independent media. We have a long history of a vibrant and independent media, underpinning the values of our democracies. We have long supported media freedoms at home and the development of a strong and independent media overseas. The Media Freedom Coalition has identified challenges to media freedom around the world. Countries are using increasingly restrictive laws to stifle freedom of expression and prevent the functioning of an independent media. The UK and Canada have expressed our concerns to the Government of Vietnam about several cases of freedom of expression in which individuals have been arrested, including Pham Chi Dung and other members of the Independent Journalists Association of Vietnam (IJAVN) and of the journalist Pham Thi Doan Trang. We urge the Government of Vietnam to ensure its actions and laws are consistent with Vietnam’s international obligations and commitments.

Ambassador Deborah Paul and 28 presidents from 39 universities all across Canada virtually discussed student recruitment and the Canada - Vietnam education partnership. The virtual videoconference, co-hosted by Embassy of Canada to Vietnam and Universities Canada - the voice of Canadian universities at home and abroad, was a great opportunity for Ambassador Paul and the leaders of Canadian universities to discuss strategies for regaining and increasing Canada’s international education market share in Vietnam and continuing to strengthen priority areas of collaboration during and post the Covid-19 pandemic. #DYK Vietnam is one of the fastest growing markets for recruiting international students to Canada and an increasing number of Canadian universities want to explore and collaborate with Vietnamese partners.
