Five years ago today, on September 23, 2015, three of the Assyrian hostages captured by ISIS during its February 2015 assault on the Khabour Region in northeast...ern Syria were killed. Their names were Dr. Abdulmasih Enwiya, Ashur Abraham, and Basam Michael. The hostages appeared in an execution video made public by ISIS online in early October 2015, a standard practice for the terrorist group. Their last words were, "I am an Assyrian Christian." Joseph Backus was the son of Assyrian-Canadians, Eli and Annie Backus who had migrated from Urmieh, Iran to North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Joe enlisted to fight for the Canadian Army in World War II. He held the rank of Corporal and was a part of the 14th Canadian Hussars, R. C. A. C. unit. Joe fought bravely for Canada during the war and unfortunately lost his life fighting for our freedoms on October 6, 1944. ... We are grateful to Joe for his ultimate sacrifice for our rights and freedoms. CCAR has customized a poppy in dedication to Joe. He will always be our hero! If you would like to customize and dedicate a poppy to one of our fallen soldiers, go to https://mypoppy.ca/

Emergency Response Appeal - A Helping Hand: Assyrians in Lebanon A couple of weeks ago, Assyrian organizations met with Assyrian Support Committee to discuss th...e difficulties facing the Assyrians in Lebanon and it was evident then that our people needed our help. Lebanon was already facing political unrest, an unprecedented economic crisis, famine, and a pandemic. At the time, our main focus was to help keep our people afloat by providing the financial support they needed to combat lack of food due to inflation, mounting medical bills and lack of housing security. After the events in Beirut on August 4th, 2020, a call to action is even more crucial for our people. Therefore, we are collaborating with Assyrian organizations (see below) in North America to collect funds for Assyrians in Lebanon. How can you help? Do your part and make a $20 donation today to help alleviate the suffering of Assyrians in Lebanon in the wake of the tragic explosion in Beirut, the ongoing economic crisis, and famine. Funds will be donated to the Beirut based Assyrian Support Committee and the Iraqi Christian Relief Council to be used to help Assyrian families across Lebanon meet basic needs including food, shelter, and water.
