Research shows that taking live beneficial bacteria, such as probiotics, can improve microbiome health, reducing the symptoms of many health conditions and improving general health. While eating foods that naturally contain probiotics is a good start - it’s important to note that specific types (strains) of probiotics, at defined doses, are better suited to help manage particular health conditions. For example, the strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus is the world’s most extensive...ly researched probiotic strain backed by over 1,000 research papers; there is abundant scientific literature supporting the use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus on its own or alongside Saccharomyces cerevisiae (boulardii) or other strains, to help re-establish a healthy microbiome following antibiotic use. When choosing a probiotic, be sure to only select a product that states the specific strains and doses on the label, and uses only those strains that are proven by scientific evidence to be beneficial for the specified purpose you need it for. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some cause respiratory illness in people, ranging from mild common colds to severe illnesses. Others cause illness in animals. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people then spread from person to person through close contact. The COVID-19 strain does not appear to be as severe as other coronaviruses, such as SARS. Many patients have reported only mild symptoms. To date, 33 cases have been announced in Canada and there are no c...onfirmed or probable cases in Alberta. It appears COVID-19 is transmitted through person-to-person spread by larger droplets, like from a cough or sneeze, and touching contaminated objects or surfaces, then touching your eyes, nose or mouth. To protect yourself and others: use good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing cover coughs and sneezes avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands stay at home and away from others if you are feeling ill contact your primary health provider or Health Link if you have questions or concerns about your health Symptoms for the novel coronavirus are similar to those for influenza or other respiratory illnesses. The most common symptoms include: fever cough tiredness Most people (about 80%) recover from this disease without needing special treatment. Those who are older, and those with other medical problems are more likely to develop serious illness. For now, there is no specific vaccine for this strain of coronavirus (COVID-19). Supportive care has been used in treatment of patients with COVID-19 and some medications are being tested to see if they can help patients with severe disease. Hypertension affects 7.5 million Canadians, and is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. If you do have high blood pressure there are many things we can do to help manage it including medications, dietary management, exercise, limiting salt intake, smoking cessation, limiting alcohol consumption, and of course monitoring your blood pressure. When you take your blood pressure, there are certain things you can do to ensure that you are getting the most a...ccurate result: 1. You should be seated 2. Your arm should be bare and supported at about heart level 3. The cuff is usually applied to the non-dominant arm 4. The lower edge of the cuff should be about 3 cm above the crease of the elbow 5. Do not talk or move just before or during the measurement 6. Rest quietly for about 5 minutes before taking the reading 7. Your feet should be flat on the floor and your legs should be uncrossed 8. Do not smoke or drink caffeine in the 30 minutes prior to taking your reading For more info on blood pressure management, talk to your Capsule Pharmacist! #bloodpressure #health #wellness #pharmacy #pharmacist #yyc #calgary #lifestyle #hearthealth See more

Winter time in Calgary is the driest time of the year, so here are some tips and pointers on selecting a proper moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated: You will see four main types of products based on their consistency: lotions being the thinnest, gels, creams, then ointments generally the thicker the product the better they can lock in moisture into your skin. Lotions, gels, and creams tend to be more water based so they are more cosmetically appealing, spread more easily..., and are good for larger areas of the body. Ointments are oil based and lock in moisture better, so they are good for really dry patches of skin and particularly for those who have eczema. However, they tend to feel more greasy and so aren’t always the best choice for the face as they may leave a film and give a shinier appearance. If you want something for the face, you may want to choose something lightweight such as a lotion or lightweight cream. You may also want to consider choosing a product that is marked as hypoallergenic and has no added fragrances or irritants, as these products tend to cause more irritation to the skin, particularly if you have sensitive skin or if you have a skin condition like eczema. For more info on selecting a moisturizer, talk to your Capsule Pharmacist! #skincare #skincareroutine #skincaretips #moisturizer #cosmetics #winter #pharmacist #pharmacy #wellness #lifestyle #health #yyc #calgary

It’s the season for holiday parties and great food but sometimes the food you eat can lead to stomach issues, which will have you running to the pharmacy the next day. Heartburn is probably one of the biggest complaints associated with overindulging at holiday parties. For heartburn you can use products like Tums and Rolaids, which work quickly but they don’t last very long, (approximately 1.5 hours). Then you have the H2 receptor blockers which includes products like Pepcid... and Zantac (however, Zantac has been the subject of a massive recall the last couple of months so you probably won’t find it right now), and these types of products take a bit longer to work, but they last longer than the simple products like Tums and Rolaids. Be careful with these products though as overusing them will render them less effective over time. Then on the stronger end of the spectrum you have products called PPI’s that are the most effective of the bunch. Most of them are by prescription only but the lower dose Nexium for example is now available without a prescription. PPI’ are best taken on an empty stomach ideally 30 minutes before breakfast Join us on Tuesday Dec 17 at 7:18am on CTV Morning Live as we discuss this and more! #pharmacy #capsule #health #wellness #facts #tips #heartburn #stomach #yyc #calgary

Healthy Eating Tips A big part of staying healthy is eating healthy. With the help of recommendations from the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, here are some tips you can apply to ensure you are eating a well balanced diet: 1. Choose healthy carbohydrates: There are many healthy carbohydrates that are actually good for you. Low glycemic index foods, such as legumes, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables can help control blood sugar, protect... you from heart disease and stroke, and can make you feel full longer to help with losing weight. Include more of these carbohydrates in your diet. 2. Limit processed foods: Processed foods and drinks are those that are prepared with excess sodium, sugar and saturated fat. Instead of highly processed foods, choose whole foods and prepare most of your meals at home. 3. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables: At each meal and as a healthy snack, choose fresh vegetables and fruits. Eat whole or cut vegetables and fruits instead of drinking juices (fruit juice and fruit juice concentrates are high in sugar). Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit at every meal and snack. 4. Choose healthy fats: The good fats are found in foods like olive oil, canola oil, other vegetable oils, avocado, nuts, seeds, and oily fish like trout and salmon. These are called unsaturated fats. Saturated fats on the other hand, can increase your cholesterol level and your risk of heart disease. Choose foods with saturated fat less often-butter, red meat, cakes, pastries, deep fried foods, high fat dairy products. 5. Choose healthy proteins: when picking your source of protein, try including plant-based protein more often. Plant-based protein foods can provide more fibre and less saturated fat than other type of protein foods. 6. Drink water: Make water your beverage of choice. Water is a sugar-free and calorie-free way to quench your thirst and stay hydrated. 7. Try meal planning each week and eating smaller, more frequent meals. We hope you find these tips helpful in creating a healthy diet routine! For other healthy living tips ask your Capsule Pharmacist! #health #healthylifestyle #healthyeating

Diabetes is a chronic progressive condition that occurs when the body either can’t produce or properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas that regulates the amount of sugar in your blood. Too much sugar in your blood over time can cause damage to organs, blood vessels and nerves. Over 3 million Canadians are living with diabetes. There are three main types of diabetes: A. Type 1 - an autoimmune disease where your body isn’t able to pro...duce its own insulin B. Type 2 - typically develops in adulthood and the most common form, the body can’t produce enough insulin or it can’t properly use the insulin it produces C. Gestational diabetes - occurs in pregnancy and usually disappears after delivery Fortunately, people living with diabetes can effectively manage their condition through lifestyle interventions, medications, and proper monitoring. Join us on Tuesday, November 19th at 7:18am on CTV Morning Live for our discussion on managing diabetes! @ctvmorningliveyyc #calgary #yyc #pharmacy #pharmacist #diabetes #health #wellness #facts #tips #advice #thursday

With the continuously changing weather in Calgary, do you find you get more migraines? Migraines are more severe and debilitating than other types of headaches, and impact over 2.7 million Canadians. They consist of moderately to severely intense headaches with throbbing or pulsating pain and are often on one side of the head. Other debilitating symptoms include nausea; vomiting; and hypersensitivity to lights, sounds and smells. Here are some important stats: * It has been e...stimated that just 20.2 per cent of CM (chronic migraine) sufferers receive a CM diagnosis, and only 33.3 per cent of CM patients use preventive medication. * Patients with CM are more likely to miss days of work, school, household work, become occupationally disabled and experience lower levels of household income. * Patients with CM are nearly twice as likely to be affected by depression or anxiety when compared to those with episodic migraines. * Patients with CM are more likely to receive opioid medications than those with episodic migraines. * Over 80 per cent of CM sufferers in Canada are women Fortunately, there are treatment options for migraines that can help treat an acute migraine attack or to help prevent future migraines from happening. Some of the acute treatments include analgesics and triptans, while some preventative treatments can include Botox, amitriptyline, topiramate, propranolol, and valproic acid - to name a few. Come in to Capsule Pharmacy to ask us about some of these options and visit mychronicmigraine.ca for some additional great info! #migraine #capsule #pharmacy #pharmacist #wednesday #facts #tips #themoreyouknow #health #wellness #yyc #calgary #downtown See more

Probiotics Probiotics are naturally occurring organisms found predominantly in the GI tract that provide therapeutic or preventative benefit for the host. The most commonly used probiotics found in supplements and foods include the lactobacillus species, bifidobacteria species, and the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. Some examples of foods that contain probiotics include yogurt, kefir, cheese, fermented cabbage (such as kimchi), kombucha tea, buttermilk, miso, pickles, and te...mpeh. Probiotics have shown to provide many health benefits including the following: 1. Prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea 2. Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome 3. Prevention of respiratory tract infections such as the common cold, sinusitis, and pharyngitis 4. Prevention of vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) Probiotics have a great safety profile but caution should be exercised in those who are severely ill or immunocompromised. Not all probiotics are created equal. There can be significant variability between probiotics based on manufacturing methods, storage, and species-related differences. So it’s best to choose those products that have shown to be beneficial in clinical studies.
