An advanced needling technique aimed to treat and release ...both acute and chronic myofascial pain, and re-set the nervous system, additional points for TMJ, Headaches, Cervical, Thoracic, Low Back, Deep Hip, Groin, & Abdominal muscles were added to her skill set. For more information feel free to contact Ashley at [email protected]

Last week our patients told us that there are 17 outdoor hockey rinks along the Boyne River...SEVENTEEN! So we just had to go check out the 4.2 km skating trail for ourselves, and it was a beautiful weekend to do it! A big shout out to the Boyne River Keepers and all the volunteers who continue to make this community shine! For more info, check out the recent article on PV online.

Big thanks to The Breakaway for a delicious take out lunch this past Tuesday! It’s been a challenging year for us all. While we’ve heard the saying We’re all in the same storm, but we’re not all in the same boat we couldn’t agree more. While we too were one of the many businesses closed back in spring, we feel incredibly fortunate to remain open for patients who rely on our services as part of their physical and mental wellness. As long time Chamber of Commerce members..., supporters, board members, and volunteers we stand beside our friends and fellow business owners who are sadly facing massive challenges during what should be their busiest season of the year. Each of our staff will receive a gift card purchased from a different local business within the community they work this year, and in place of a staff Christmas party we have opted to cater in lunch for our staff once a week for the month of December at all locations. While not much, we are able to spread the love and support to over 20 different small businesses in our communities. We encourage you all to continue to shop local as much as you are able, and to consider curbside pick up and take out this holiday season. We NEED our local businesses to survive and thrive so they can continue to support all our community initiatives like they have been so gracious at doing for so many years

As the months continue of working from home and shifting work spaces around, the onset of overuse injuries like Tennis Elbow are finding their way into our offi...ces. Lateral Epicondylitis or Tennis Elbow is the most common overuse syndrome found in the elbow. A tendinopathy involving the extensor muscles of the forearm, it is found in people who perform repetitive one side arm movements such as computer work, heavy lifting and forceful up and down motions of the palm. Tennis elbow presents with pain down the outside of the elbow, sharp pain at the elbow bone (the lateral epicondyle), and pain that can travel down the top of the forearm and even into the 3rd and 4th fingers. Pain can be faint and come on a couple hours after activity, come on immediately after activity, be provoked during the activity, or prevent you from performing an activity. It is important to seek prompt evaluation from a Physical Therapist because other conditions such as cervical radiculopathy, radial tunnel syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome are just some of the ones that can mimic tennis elbow and prevent you from seeing the improvements you are looking for. The sooner you begin rehab, the quicker you will be on your road to recovery. Hoping this will go away and waiting to address worsening pain, will end you up with a lengthy recovery process! It all begins with prevention! So make sure you take extra time to set up an appropriate ergonomic work station that is suited for your needs. Take and schedule frequent rest breaks throughout the day to get up walk around, move and stretch. Make it a regular point to actually make them happen! Pay close attention to stretching, moving and opening up the the neck, chest and forearm. A Physiotherapist will recommend pain management techniques, perform hands on treatment, recommend and fit you for an elbow strap if needed, and set you up with specific strengthening exercises to progressively load the tendon when the time is right! Taking a moment today to recognize and thank again, our many frontline healthcare workers. From cleaning staff, to dietary aides, healthcare aides, admin staff,... nurses, doctors and more, many continue to work long and tiring hours away from their families during the holiday season. Physiotherapists across the province who work in hospital settings, have been asked to constantly change and adapt to many new roles during COVID, often seeing themselves doing work outside of their normal job description. Physiotherapists are also part of the group of regulated healthcare professionals, that have recently been approved by the Manitoba government to complete training and assist if needed with delivering COVID vaccines in the upcoming months. Physiotherapists like many healthcare workers are willing to step up to these challenges bc they are strong willed, determined, adaptable, passionate and selfless. Thank you front line healthcare workers for continuing to sacrifice your holidays, and thank you to our part time PT Kaitlyn, and our Physiotherapy colleagues at Boundary Trails Health Centre, and across the entire Province, for making us so darn proud during this difficult time. Wishing you all a Safe & Happy New Year!

Completing courses is one thing. Applying them to your practice is another. Our clinics are successful not only because our clinicians are committed to completing on-going education, but because they are also dedicated enough to also sacrifice additional free time to collaborate, practice and fine tune those skills. We are proud to have created a culture where Mentorship is both valued and appreciated. The young learn from the experienced, and the experienced learn from the... new, creating an environment where everybody wins, including most importantly the patients. Last night Ashley, Stefan and Alex got together for a full evening of dry needling practice and Mentorship. Ashley was able to share some of the pros and cons she’s learned over the years, and the different ways she has found dry needling effective in her practice. The young guns in turn were able to help Ashley freshen up her skills as she prepares to return to the clinic. Dry needling is fantastic evidenced based option for treating and managing both acute and chronic pain. It is now available at ALL 3 of our locations, so feel free to DM us for more information!

Fall Raking Tips From The Pro’s! Do the job ONCE, and wait until all the leaves are fallen! Warm up a bit first! A stiff and cold body never bends well! ...USE GOOD POSTURE! Bend at your knees, not at the back Keep the rake close to your body, move your body with the rake rather than reaching and pulling. More steps for your day, less ache for your back Remember to switch positions and hands on the rake to avoid overuse Choose a rake with a wide spread, greater than 30 inches, make sure it’s tall enough for you Rake in rows, avoid raking all your leaves towards the centre which wastes additional time and energy. If you have lots of leaves to rake, consider breaking down the activity and taking timed breaks Smarter leaf collection. Reduce your workload by raking your leaves into one large tarp rather than multiple bags Kneel down when filling bags rather than bending over for long periods of time Use caution not to slip on wet leaves If you tend to have a history of back pain with repetitive bending, consider slapping a back brace on for the task Stay hydrated! It’s cold outside but you’re still working up a sweat! If you happen to feel a tweak, get in and see a Physio ASAP before it gets out of control And Our BIGGEST piece of advice....put your kids/grandkids to work and have them do it for you! See more

It is estimated that 27,400 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2020. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical procedures leave women with impaired shoulder and arm mobility, strength, function, and in some cases post-operative cording. Reconstructive surgeries like the TRAM and DIEP also place women at risk for abdominal weakness, hernia formation, flap failures and wound complications. ... It’s important to remember that trained Women’s Health Physiotherapists play a vital and yet often forgotten about role in optimizing a woman’s recovery and function. We specifically utilize gentle moist heat prior to applying manual therapies including scar mobilization to reduce pulling, nerve sensitivity and discomfort post mastectomy or reconstruction. We work on safely re-establishing range of motion, posture re-education, scar management, and use of the arm bike to facilitate deep breathing and chest expansion. We help establish a safe return to exercise and activity, while also prescribing rehabilitative exercises to regain chest, scapular strength & stability. All important details when striving to regain a sense of normalcy, and ability to do functional and recreational activities. Most importantly, we are there to support, encourage, and lean on every step of the way! #breastcancerawareness #breastcancerawarenessmonth #breastcancer #cancer

Grateful for Thanksgiving 2020 As we sit back and reflect on this past year, we are feeling incredibly blessed, despite all the challenges and frustrations our business, team & communities face. Thank you to our staff, colleagues, and fellow physiotherapists, who long before an announcement of any government relief, supported our decision to close our clinics in March, sacrificing their complete pay cheques in order to do what they felt was the right thing. Thank you for ste...pping up and quickly learning how to utilize telehealth, even when many felt it was outside of their comfort zone. You adapted for your patients in a great time of need. Thank you again, for working tremendously hard to slowly rebuild and start from scratch, on years of built up patient schedules, all while continuing to support each other and stay positive. There is no other team of therapists we would rather work beside. Thank you to our administrative staff, who graciously accepted being temporarily laid off this year, a decision we never want to be faced with again. You trusted us, checked in on how we were doing, and came back fearless, driven, and ready to step up and help wherever it was needed. Thank you to our patients and fellow community members, who continue to support and encourage us. Just like we’ve had to adapt, so have you. Your commitment to us and our communities does not go unrecognized. How thankful we are to be a part of these great communities. Whats ahead is uncertain, but we know this. In times of struggle, our team STEPS UP, & our community STEPS UP. We will continue to do so. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families, we are so thankful!

Unloader braces are a cost effective management option for young patients with Knee osteoarthritis, or those on a long waiting list for total joint replacement. It has been shown to dramatically affect a patient’s QOL (quality of life) and should be combined with other standard treatment guidelines like physiotherapy for management Reference: Mistry D.A. et al.
