The First CASIS Vancouver Digital Roundtable is happening on January 21st with Dr. Garth Davies. Dr. Garth Davies is an Associate Professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. His current work involves developing a database for evaluating programs for countering violent extremism; the social psychology of radicalization; and the statistical modeling and projection of violent right-wing extremism. He has also been involved in the development of the Terrori...sm and Extremism Network Extractor (TENE), a web-crawler designed to investigate extremist activities on the internet. The crawler is presently being adapted to examine violent extremism on the dark net. Dr. Davies earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University. Speaker Spotlight: Nicole Davison will be giving welcome remarks for Panel 2: Technological Innovations in Intelligence Bio: Nicole Davison took up her position as British Consul General to Vancouver in July 2016. She is the British government’s representative in British Columbia, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Davison joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1988 and has served in South Africa, Bangladesh, Ukraine, and China. Previously, she was the Dep...uty Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia. In London, she worked in the FCO’s Western European Department and the Latin America and Caribbean Department. She has also been responsible for the FCO’s parliamentary affairs and ran one of the teams in the FCO’s Global Response Centre (covering consular and political crises). Speaker Spotlight: Charles Dumbrille will be giving opening remarks for Panel 2: Technological Innovations in Intelligence Bio: Charles Dumbrille is the Chief Risk Officer at IN-D-TEL International with more than 15 years’ experience in the security industry. His focus is on supporting organizations in managing country risk and conflict disruptions; building international portfolios and garnering stakeholder support. He has a broad cultural knowledge that has been acquired f...rom substantial on-the ground monitoring within 70+ countries across six continents. He has worked in the Canadian Government; CNN; and the Carter Center. Charles serves as President of the Mining Security Working Group, and is the Membership Chair of the ASIS Petrochemical, Chemical and Extractive Security Council. He holds a BA (Hons.) in History at Queen’s University, Kingston; an MA from the War Studies Department at King’s College London and is a Certified Protection Professional. Speaker Spotlight: Kerry Waterman will be speaking in Panel 1: Data Driven Defence: International Strategies and will be speaking on How Small States Work Together for Regional Security in Complex Security Threat Environments Bio: Major Kerry Waterman joined the Regional Security System in September 2019 as Director of Plans, Policing and Risk Management. In 2002, Major Waterman gained a place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). He was commissioned into the Britis...h Army in 2004. During this time, he completed his Master’s degree in Training Management and Consultancy at The University of Portsmouth and qualified as an Equality and Diversity Adviser, a course offered by the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, Shrivenham. He completed his military Short Service Commission and then joined the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in September 2008. After successfully gaining a place on the National Higher Potential Development Scheme, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Police Leadership and Management at Warwick Business School. Major Waterman was a New Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector, where he investigated numerous serious and complex cases. He was part of the senior leadership team on the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Commands before starting with the RSS. He is a national hostage negotiation and crisis intervention specialist and has intervened in numerous potentially life-changing situations. Major Waterman is the recipient of the Barbados 50th Anniversary of Independence Golden Jubilee award for outstanding service in the UK to the military and police. Hennessy Ph.D. is a Professor of History and War Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, ON. Former interim VP Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, and Associate Vice-Principal for Research, Dr. Hennessy has served in m...any roles at the Royal Military College, notably as the Chair of the War Studies Interdisciplinary Graduate Program and Chair of the Department of History. Dr. Hennessy has published widely on various Canadian defence related topics from strategic postures to procurement policies and contributed to the writing of national naval, airforce and army doctrine. His significant publications include Strategy in Vietnam: The Marines and Revolutionary War in I Corps, 1965-1972, (Praeger, 1997), the recently co-authored War Without Fronts Les Guerres Sans Fronts (CDA Press, 2012), and the co-edited works War in the Twentieth Century (Praeger 2003) and The Operational Art. Developments in the Theories of War (Praeger, 1996).Professor Hennessy served as a co-director and project lead to create the PfPc’s cybersecurity reference curriculum project that wrote Cybersecurity A Generic Reference Curriculum, published as a NATO Transformation Command document in September 2016 and has assisted a number of partner nations in implementing the recommendations. Speaker Spotlight: Patrick Welch will be speaking in Panel 1: Data Driven Defence: International Strategies and will be speaking on Drone Warfare in Transnational Armed Conflict and Counterterrorism Bio: Dr. James Welch holds a temporary appointment as Senior Lecturer at Rabdan Academy. In 2019 Dr. Welch worked in the leadership program at Rabdan Academy. His areas of specialization are forensic psychology, criminology, law, arson, drone warfare and intelligence. He has contr...ibuted a chapter on Crisis and Emergency management for the forthcoming title Policing in the 21st Century.After retiring from the United States Marine Corps, he became a sworn interpreter to the Belgian Federal police, a position he still maintains. From 2010 until 2012 Dr. Welch deployed to the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. Embedded with the US Army he worked closely with military police and intelligence units. Following his return, in 2013, he served as a security adviser to the National Security Conference and General McCrystal in Washington D.C. Under contract, Dr. Welch trained the Abu Dhabi Police from 2014 2016 in a variety of subject matter. He also works for NATO as a German interpreter and is still a sworn essential functions officer with the US Department of Defense (EF-301-00). Dr. Welch holds an associate degree in child psychology, a Bachelor of Science degree in political science and criminal justice (magna cum laude), two master’s degrees, one in international area studies (magna cum laude), the other in intelligence studies (summa cum laude).
