There are days when it’s rushed...trying to get out the door, to be on time for work or activities. Sometimes adopting an ish mentality (e.g., you made a commitment for 5pm but instead you plan for 5ish) In the heat of the chaos remember: if we rush and stress our kids it will take longer. They are the reason behind everything we do. To move them forward sometimes we have to breathe and connect before we correct!!!

The best thing we can do for our children is to teach them about themselves! Caddac has put out this video for parents to utilize in educating their children about ADHD. Its a great one to share with children who do not have a diagnosis too...everyone should have a chance to learn more

Many of us are wildly aware of the impact Learning Disabilities have on children and families. However: Please share so we can continue educating those who may not quite understand that behind the labels are bright beautiful children who are capable, delightful, and need a large dose of compassion and patience

Always worth reminding ourselves that describing a childs genuine need as "looking for attention" keeps the behavior and the struggle from shifting to something that will eventually transform the behavior and struggle. This is true at home and in the classroom.

Again, with school approaching some of our kiddos will likely have a hard time adjusting. We are their safe place, and as parents, it can be very hard to lean in when our own stress responses compel us to flee. Stay close, breathe, our children need us so much

We have school starting soon!!! Many families are excited AND anxious over what the school year may bring. Meltdowns are par for the course. Breathe, offer snacks, and know that youre their safe place.

This is a brilliant article about co-regulation. There is much for us to consider here in relation to how we can support our children. The author refers to Deb... Dana too, whose work is stunning. I am reading Danas book at the moment and I would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone interested in Dr Porgess Polyvagal Theory. I plan to write an article about how we can translate Danas Clinical applications of Polyvagal theory to Parenting. There are a number of aspects of her work that could really help empower us to support our children back to a Neuroception of safety. Co-regulation is very much a part of this. See more

When we lose our cool most of what we say or do is completely lost on our children. All they learn when were flailing is that they have the power to hurt us or... ignite our rage, which unsettles them, creates an unsafe atmosphere, and usually causes them to repeat their difficult behaviors until or unless we find some control. But were human. Were never going to like it when our kids are upset, and were going to lose our cool sometimes more than sometimes during the toddler years. How can we control our feelings and responses? Heres what has worked for me...

This goes for adults with autism too. I know Eric has enjoyed it when he has participated in the drumming circle at The Hub On Ross. He definitely interacts then.

Hand washing is such a tricky thing for kids who are often in a hurry to get back to doing what they enjoy...in our house the kids often try to skip this IMPORTANT step! I now keep a little squishy beside the sink and the kids enjoy soaping it up and rinsing it off. They spend more time with the soap on their hands than they ever have before! Do you have little tips/tricks to help develop healthy habits in your children? Please share!

Phrases such as Im here for you and It feels better to let it all out, hey my love? gives your child permission to feel what they feel, and sets you up for feeling greater empathy in times when you have to DIG deep to keep calm.

One of my favourite things to explore with my clients on a cold day, is science. An activity you can try with your busy troops can involve just a couple cups of water and a bit of patience! Have the kids fill 2 cups. Place one in the freezer, and one outside. Encourage them to check on both and find out which freezes first. This can open up dialogue about wearing warm clothes outside, learning about thermometers, or can lead to different types of liquids and how they freez...e at different rates. Fostering curiosity and play can go a VERY long way to teaching children about being curious about themselves. Ie: Your tummy often hurts when we are in the vehicle, I wonder why that is. Or Im here for you. Lets explore what is bothering you when you have settled.

This article is a great reminder of the fun that can be had outdoors even for our kids who are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. So, perhaps this weekend, when it is cold and the kids are pinging inside, explore what fun it would be to do a scavenger hunt outside when the weather warms up. Our kids need a little free-exploration time and prepping them with a fun idea can help pull them out of the present and give them something to look forward to!

This is something we look forward to doing every year. Skating at Bower Ponds, and enjoying a hot drink afterwards can be bonding. If youre looking for a fun outdoorsy activity, check this out! We might just see you there!!!
