: : / This is the first step to turn your idea into a prototype. It is easy to start sketching ideas onto paper and start imagining what it will look like. You will save time doing this on paper quickly rather than perfecting it digitally using professional software. This will help you convey what you imagine a lot easier to your product designer or engineer while also leaving room for th...e professionals to improve and dial in the features. : / / Depending on the product and needs of the project, it might be in your best interest to engage with one of the above professionals to turn your product idea/ sketch into a real design that looks amazing, has the right materials considered, tolerances kept in mind and designed to be manufactured depending on volume requirements of the project. This is a very important step as it WILL in the long run save you a lot of money and a lot of headaches. : Is it for Design? Functionality? Both? To showoff at trade-show? Something else It is important to define the purpose as it will affect the outcome significantly. There are lots of options on different prototyping methods and each come with their own pros and cons. I will cover these in future posts. Generally, start with cheaper options to dial in the design and then move to higher quality options where they look almost as good as the final product to show to customers as well as to work out the final little details to make sure that your final product is going to be just right. , @-. #catalystdesignconsulting #productdesign #engineeringservices #mechanicaldesign #entrepreneurship #prototyping #productdevelopment #newproductdevelopment #product #prototype #idea #innovations

: 1. Need to define priorities in regards to cost, function, quality and design 2. What is the budget for development? This would include prototypes, product samples, shipping costs for samples and prototypes, any other unforeseen expenses and engineering development time. ... 3. What is the budget for one time costs in regards to molds and other setup fees for injection molding? 4. Who is my manufacturer? Are they capable? 5. Who is doing the packaging and labeling? 6. Do i want it turn-key? I receive the final unit, fully packaged and ready sell? Or do i want all the pieces and I assemble it myself and package it myself. 7. Do I want to build it overseas or do I want to build it locally? 8. What yearly quantity do you expect to sell? 9. What is the ideal cost of goods (COGs), this includes the circuit boards, plastic enclosure, box, labels, etc. 10. What kind of quality do you require from the product? How long do you want it to last? What is the warranty time that you want to provide? We can design and pick components accordingly. 11. What do you think it will sell for? This is to make sure that we have lots of margin for you to make profit. #catalystdesignconsulting #productdesign #engineeringservices #mechanicaldesign #entrepreneurship #prototyping #productdevelopment #newproductdevelopment #product #prototype #idea #innovations

. . ? What will it be used for? Once this is defined, it will help define the questions below. ... . ? This should answer the end use of the product. If it is going to be used indoors or outdoors? Temperature and humidity it may have to endure in worse case scenarios. Will there be corrosion? Is it used by an adult or a child? Likelihood of it getting stressed, strained or shocked. Finally, what happens if the product does fail - is it repair or replacement? . ? This should address priorities for cost, aesthetics, ease of use, ease of assembly, material strength, industrial design, frequency of use, product lifespan Feel free to comment below if there are more considerations that should be added to the list. #catalystdesignconsulting #productdesign #engineeringservices #mechanicaldesign #entrepreneurship #prototyping #productdevelopment #newproductdevelopment #product #prototype #idea #innovations

: , Use standard fasteners as much as possible. Use self-tapping and chamfered screws for better placement.... Stay away from screws that are too long or too short, separate washers, tapped holes, round heads and flatheads. Minimize reorientation of parts during assembly and/or machining Parts should be designed so that a minimum of manual interaction is necessary during production and assembly. Personalization and customization are expensive and time-consuming. Using quality standardized parts can shorten time to production as such parts are typically available and you can be more certain of their consistency. Material is based on the planned use of the product and it's function. Consider: -How should it feel? Hard? Soft? -Does it need to withstand pressure? -Will your part or product need to conduct heat, electricity? -Create modular assemblies -Using non-customized modules/modular assemblies in your design allows you to modify the product without losing its overall functionality. A simple example is a basic automobile that allows you to add in extras by putting in a modular upgrade. : Reducing the number of parts in a product is the quickest way to reduce cost because you are reducing the amount of material required, the amount of engineering, production, labor, all the way down to shipping costs. Look for ways to join parts without the use of screws, fasteners or adhesives. / The more complex the process of making your product, is the more variables for error are introduced. Remember what Jeff said: All processes have limitations and capabilities. Only include those operations that are essential to the function of the design. ‘’ Unless it must be trade show grade, go with function rather than flashy for your surface finish. It's been said that 80 percent of your product development cost is tied up in the design, especially at the early stage. If that's the case, you want to be sure you're expending that cost to create the very best possible product for your customers. DFM is one way your contract manufacturer can make goal that a reality. #catalystdesignconsulting #productdesign #engineeringservices #mechanicaldesign #entrepreneurship #prototyping #productdevelopment #newproductdevelopment #product #prototype #idea #innovations
