Working at the animal shelter, we hear all different reasons why people need to surrender their pets to us. Moving, allergies, frequently escaping from the home..., divorce, etc. But when it comes down to surrendering a heeler (Australian Cattle Dog), it’s almost the exact same reason every time. He’s biting us Being very nippy He keeps chasing my kids and biting their ankles Too mouthy, and getting rough Going after people and/or other animals These photos (credit to Jeff Jaquish) show exactly why the dog is displaying this behavior. They are bred to work. They are bred to herd and handle large livestock, even the mean, nasty ones. Not all cows are nice and go where you want. They are bred to bite. So you take this fluffy cute puppy, raise it in a pet home and not provide any drive satisfaction, that breed’s genetic make up of specific desires and needs come out. One way or another. Biting, destruction, running away. Research the breed before you commit. Know what individual breeds are bred to do, and within those breeds know what breeders breed for in traits because there are so many degrees of traits within a breed standard. Pet home vs working dog. (Note: pet homes still have variations of drive levels.) And if you don’t have cows, or able to provide the sole purpose that dog was bred to do (hunting, racing, detection), give it another type of job (dog sports for example) that can satisfy the dog mentally and physically. Plus train, train, train! Most importantly, it’s a life time commitment, so make it a happy one for you and your dog by getting to know your dog’s world better. Update: my post is in regards of dog behavior, genetics and drive satisfaction. I’m not saying if a dog bites or mouths it’s meaning the dog is aggressive. In addition, a dog with working traits can still make a good family dog when their needs are met. Also if you own a dog that bites, seek a professional to determine the underlying reason. Catalyst ACD puppies are 6 weeks old. Days are getting shorter, and these pups are loving being outdoors. Plus the late afternoon sun really brings out their deepening colours!... Hope you enjoy the photos. Reminder - all of these puppies are sold and they have new families waiting for them in 2 weeks!

Our puppies turned 5 weeks old yesterday and they have had two very big days to help them celebrate. 1. First time outside on grass! 2. First time non-family visitors! (all physical distancing and safe health protocols were followed). I am very happy to report that each and every puppy handled the new experiences so well. A bit of hesitation with new voices at the beginning and some surprise with the feeling of grass on their bellies (and privates!) but within minutes they we...re back to being confident and playful. Many thanks to puppy holder/hand model Zackary for the help with the individual photos. And Minh for being the ‘Puppy Magnet’ to get the group shot. And proof of how hard it is taking photos of puppies there is one puppy who had a dozen photos taken and not one with eyes open!

This is Catalyst ACDs' weekly puppy photo and weight gain update. Another stellar week of mothering by Special has brought each puppy up another 200+g each! Weights now range from 500g to 750g! Very chubby puppies! In addition to adding weight, all pups are proudly showing of their true colours!... I always tell people that you never really know what colour they are until at least 2 weeks old. Well, we had a colour change. One of the red boys is turning blue in a good way. So there are 3 Red girls, 3 Blue girls, 2 Red boys and 1 Blue boy!

The Catalyst Naughty Nine litter is 9 days old today. Eyes are very close to opening and colours are becoming easier to see. Momma Special (Can GCh Catalyst's Something Special) is doing a phenomenal job. All puppies are gaining, growing and motoring around the whelping box like crazy! We just love these pudgy piggly-wigglies! Thanks, Janet Reid, for coming to lunch and helping to do the weekly weigh ins and photo shoot!
Eye exams complete today. Kissell (Catalyst's Started With A Song) and kd (Catalyst's Constant Cravings) are both Right Normal and Left Normal. This is the final assessment for each of them to obtain their OFA Canine Health Information Certificate (CHIC). Thank you to the Eastlake Cavalier Club for organizing this clinic for eyes and heart exams. And special thanks to Janet Reid for the company and the help!

This little guy got out of his invisible fence....no doubt chasing a squirrel that was outside the boundary. He managed to fight off the coyotes that tried to k...ill him. The shock collar around his neck had prevented his return to his home and yard, so he went back into the woods to lay down to die. His owner was determined to find him. When he was found he was pretty torn up with a temp of 94F. Invisible fencing is Not going to keep animals, or other threats out of your yard. If your dog runs through the barrier in pursuit of a critter, he's going to get corrected by that collar if he tries to get back home.... Please reconsider invisible fencing. People may say that they have been using them for years without issue. However, it only takes once for it to go very wrong..... See more

"I'm so excited! And I just can't hide it!" Less than a week until we welcome an incredible litter - Special x Kissell. We had an x-ray today to confirm the puppy count. The radiologist gave us the the technical answer - "Special has a belly full of puppies!" Comment with your best guess!... Please note that we have a waiting list of extremely excited families. We expect each puppy is spoken for. See more
