In honor of Black History Month, we will be chronicling black people in history who've helped shaped Canada. Today, we meet Viola Davis Desmond who was at the centre of one of Nova Scotia's most controversial episodes. In 1946, she refused to sit in the balcony of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, N.S. and sat on the floor reserved exclusively for white people instead. She was arrested and found guilty of not paying the full tax on a floor-seat ticket. She was jailed and fined. She died in 1965 at the age of 50. Family Service agencies are key stakeholders in combatting Violence Against Women (VAW). Agencies provide a continuum of evidence-based, family-centered, and culturally responsive #VAW services from prevention education and early intervention to treatment and crisis intervention.
Lest we forget. Thank you to all men & women who fought to ensure our freedom.
Many thanks to the Oakville Fire Department for their generous donation of carbon monoxide detectors. This donation will ensure that many of our senior clients can remain safe in their homes.
With the holiday season upon us, many in our community may go without, in particular during these exceptional times. Miracles On Main St., allows for us to assist those in need, however we can’t do it alone. If you would like to support a senior, family or developmentally delayed adult, please contact Lisa, our Fund Developer, at 905-527-3823 x.229. Please help us by being a miracle worker this Christmas season. We can’t do this without you!
