May 7 is National Child and Youth Mental Health Day. Family Service Ontario agencies help over 250,000 children, youth and families with mental health/psychotherapy services every year. We understand that mental health is a necessity for overall health.

Almost two-thirds of men who come to Family Service Ontario agencies cannot afford help. No one is turned away from our agencies, which means clients don’t have to use more expensive mental health options like hospitals and family doctors. About 50% of clients seeking quick access walk-in evidence-based psychotherapy at Family Service agencies are men. A portion of them identify as being abusive in relationships and want help with this issue or anxiety, depression and addictions.

The Family Service Ontario Couples Counselling Pilot Project proved an effective, early-intervention service to stop adult conflict escalation and reduce the risk of domestic violence. The three-year project provided specialized counselling to women and their partners. Findings from the pilot indicate an ongoing strong community demand and need for early intervention couples counselling and a high community demand for the program across the three Family Service agency test sites. Additional findings from the pilot indicate that providing ten hours of emotionally focused therapy (EFT) to couples experiencing adult conflict was effective in improving relationship quality and decreasing the risk of relationship violence
