More great things happening with food legislation in Mexico. No more cartoons on packages of industrial, processed foods! "In all age groups, between 25 to 30 per cent of the daily calorie intake comes from these industrialized foods and sugary drinks," nutritionist Gabriela Olvera Mayorga from the Autonomous University of Mexico tells dpa." "Soon, the cartoon characters, celebrities and pets that attract children to unhealthy treats will also be banished."... Often, it is passionate visionaries that result in impactful change, and Dr. Kyeremanteng checks that box. As an ICU physician, he noticed that patients with metabolic disease, often caused by our highly processed western diet, do poorly when infected with Covid-19. It was so clear. It was happening right before our eyes, Dr. Kyeremanteng says. Poor metabolic health is such a clear risk factor for severe coronavirus complications. Now he, like the CCTN, is wondering why ...we aren't focussing on spending resources trying to improve metabolic health. Reducing processed food is key, and a low carb diet can be very effective for many. #betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCanadians

This is the unfortunate, routine truth of many if not most hospitals in Canada. This is what a physician colleague was given for breakfast. Sugar in the orange juice, sugar in the maple syrup, sugar for coffee, simple carbs breaking down to sugar in processed oatmeal, and the highly refined white flour rapidly breaking down to sugar in the pancakes. What is not shown is what was actually eaten.....2 eggs. Surely we can do better for our hospitalized patients?! Hard to see how this meets the standards of the new Canada's Food Guide. How does this promote health and healing? So disappointing. #betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCandians

There are many diets which can move you toward health, with much debate over how many carbs and fat to eat, and whether we should eat animals vs plants. But what we should all really care about, and what we think has fuelled our disease epidemic, is the rise of ultra-processed food -- starches, vegetable oils and sugars combined with additives. Foods like "sugary drinks, confectionery, mass-produced breads, snack foods, sweetened dairy products and frozen desserts." "We foun...d that more ultra-processed foods in the diet associates with higher risks of obesity, heart disease and stroke, type-2 diabetes, cancer, frailty, depression and death. The evidence that ultra-processed foods are harming our health and the planet is clear. We must now consider using a variety of strategies to decrease consumption. #betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCanadians #HealthierKids

Sugar/carbohydrates and mood...not the rush effect you'd think. A great reason to reduce/quit! - "Carbohydrates do not have a beneficial effect on any aspect of mood. - Carbohydrate consumption lowers alertness within 60 min after consumption. - Carbohydrates increase fatigue within 30 min post-consumption."... #betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCanadians #HealthierKids #lesssugar See more

Great job, Mexico. Leading the way. "Why do we need bottled poison in soft drinks? López-Gatell asked. Health in Mexico would be very different if we stopped being deceived by these lifestyles sold on television and heard on radio and which we see on adverts as if this was happiness. #betterfood #lesssugar #healthierCanadians #fewermeds

Reducing your intake of sugar is one of the biggest changes you can make to improve health. This article has some great practical tips, but we completely agree - At the very least, cut out sugary drinks. #betterfood #lesssugar #healthierCanadians #fewermeds

It is becoming clear that obesity and poor metabolic health (such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome) are predictors of a poor outcome with Covid-19 infection. If it was easy to lose weight and improve metabolic health, the CCTN wouldn’t need to exist. It’s about more than ‘eat less and move more’, and it is not your fault if you haven’t succeeded with this approach. It might just be the fault of our toxic food environment that formed over the last 50 years, as a fall...out of years of unsubstantiated low-fat dietary advice. What can you do today to improve health? Ditch the processed ‘white’ stuff and choose foods in their original, whole and intact form. #Betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCanadians https://www.washingtonpost.com//1de03bbc-e187-11ea-8dd2-d0

Mexicans consume the highest amount of sugary drinks in the world (163 L per person, per year), and this starts in childhood. All this sugar worsens metabolic health, which creates a perfect storm for complications with Covid-19 infection. But the great news is that Oaxaca is banning the sale of sugary drinks and foods to kids. "The southern Mexican state of Oaxaca has banned the sale of sugary drinks and high-calorie snack foods to children a measure aimed at curbing ob...esity." This is a fantastic start in the right direction, and we should all use this as an example. #betterfood #lesssugar #healthierkids #healthierCanadians https://www.theguardian.com//mexico-oaxaca-sugary-drinks-j

The UK is launching a campaign to help tackle obesity. This is much needed. We believe underlying the obesity epidemic is metabolic dysfunction. You can start improving your own metabolic health today by choosing whole, unprocessed food instead of processed junk food. Better metabolic health will mean a reduced risk of serious complications if you become sick. #betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCanadians

"How do you know when a paradigm has shifted? You don’t, really. Revolutionary changes in science and culture usually don’t happen in one fell swoop...." "Low-carb diets as interventions for obesity, diabetes, and epilepsy have a substantial history in both popular circles and medical science. It wasn’t until low-fat diets began to gain popularity that carbohydrate reduction became widely understood as a dangerous or fad diet. But the tides are slowly turning" https://ww...w.dietdoctor.com/a-changing-landscape-for-low-car The tides are turning, and the CCTN is here to help with peer to peer education and support. #betterfood #fewermeds #healthierCanadians Join us here: https://ccfortn.ca/join/

In times of stress, we often eat higher amounts of sugary food. You might be seeing this in your own lives, particularly now during this pandemic. "For many individuals, stress promotes the consumption of sweet, high-sugar foods relative to healthier alternatives. Daily life stressors stimulate the overeating of highly-palatable foods through multiple mechanisms" Try to think about ways to minimize added sugar. #lesssugar #healthierCanadians #betterfood #fewermeds... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4787559/
