This seminar explores the function of the Qur’an as a pathway to spiritual advancement and the importance of ethical behaviours within this framework, especially gender justice. It examines classical interpretive methodologies, their strengths and weaknesses and how to make the best of them, showing the importance of thinking for oneself and of engaging the heart in the interpretive process. It explores the Qur’an’s structure, sura after sura, and how each sura builds on the ...ones before it and addresses a distinctive spiritual growing edge, organized in order of priority. It examines the function of Surat al-Nisa within this pathway and how it works to combat three toxic behaviours within marriage: polygamy, accusations of wifely infidelity, and domestic violence. It takes a closer look at the polygamy verse and its interpretations, showing how, rather than make allowances for polygamy, this verse provides ethical directives that restrict the practice and teach ethical reasoning. but what we see is that despite the laws that have been put into place for the elimination of gender based violence, there are countless cases in which they fail to bring about justice for victims. http://www.youngfeminist.eu//is-the-legal-system-failing-/

As 2020 comes to an end, we are all reflecting on the year that was. Evoking the inner Dickens, it was indeed the best of times and the worst of times. The best was on full display as essential workers risked their lives to provide healthcare to all of us and those inflicted with COVID-19, teach our children, care for our elders, stack grocery shelves to ensure we had necessary provisions for survival, deliver food from our favourite restaurants, and keep transit and other pu...blic services running. There are far too many heroes to enumerate here but without their perseverance, life could have been far more difficult. The best was also evident in the ways people came together to find ways to work, gather and socialize in a virtual world. COVID stomachs grew as families baked, cooked and ate their favourite comfort foods. The worst is best left unsaid but grief, isolation and irrevocable loss were common features. Economic, social and health inequities grew and brought to light the stark realities of systemic disadvantage faced by Black, Brown and Indigenous peoples. By the grace of God, the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) endured and prevailed. We were blessed with tireless and committed chapter, board and staff members and our friends, families and supporters that made our work and lives meaningful. The challenging times brought out the best in them and they are on course to welcome 2021 with hope and determination for a happier and healthier year ahead. Happy New Year from the CCMW family! Sincerely, Nuzhat Jafri Executive Director Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW)

Today, Nov. 25, is the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Gender-based violence can take many forms, from physical to mental, and has long-lasting negative impacts on women and girls’ well-being that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Since the outbreak of #COVID19, there has been a spike in reports of violence against women. #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an opportunity to make a difference for the better. We all have a role to play in calling out and speaking up against gender-based violence.
