RACCOON BABIES - early this spring! We have a really important story to share, where a thoughtful Ottawa family did everything right. Brigit contacted HHWR yest...erday evening, thanks to a referral from Meet the Keepers https://m.facebook.com/meetthekeepers/ .She and her family were dealing with repairing a leaky roof and discovered a raccoon living in the attic. They used a live trap to capture, planning to release in nearby woods, within the 1km legal limit. This lovely family did their due diligence and searched for babies. Even though raccoons in this region typically give birth in April & May, this mild winter means an early birthing season. They discovered a nest of 5 eyes-closed babies in the attic insulation. We suggested Brigit borrow the heated nesting box donated to HHWR by Skedaddle, https://m.facebook.com/SkedaddleWildlife/ ethical humane wildlife removal company. Raccoons typically have an alternate den to which they can relocate if the current den is threatened. Ideally, the babies are kept warm & safe in the heated box while the mother moves them one-by-one to her other den. Thankfully, this is what happened! By this morning, the babies had all been moved. If any had been left behind, HHWR would have taken them in for care and one of our raccoon-loving foster caregivers would be bottle feeding them raccoon formula. In any case, it is always best if they are raised by their mother. I'll try to tag all those who contributed!

We have received a permit to keep Pinery as a second permanent resident raccoon. Today, he goes in for neuter surgery, so he can co-habit with Holly without rep...roducing. Thanks, once again, to the team at Queensway West Animal Hospital for taking on our raccoons! We are eager to have this over. See more

Help fight this unconscionable program of extreme cruelty. Encourage B.C. friends in particular to contact their M.P.s in outrage.
