This coming Sunday marks Rare Disease Day in Canada. The first Rare Disease Day was celebrated in 2008 on February 29, which is a rare date because it happens only once every four years. Ever since then, Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch

Earlier this week was #InternationalAngelmanDay. Angelman syndrome (AS) is a complex genetic disorder that primarily affects the nervous system. Characteristic features of this condition include delayed development, intellectual disability, severe speech impairment, and problems with movement and balance (ataxia). Delayed development becomes noticeable by the age of 6 to 12 months, and other common signs and symptoms usually appear in early childhood. Children with AS typic...ally have a happy, excitable demeanor with frequent smiling, laughter, and hand-flapping movements. Hyperactivity, a short attention span, and a fascination with water are common. Most affected children also have difficulty sleeping and need less sleep than usual. Other common features include unusually fair skin with light-colored hair and an abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine (scoliosis). Angelman syndrome affects an estimated 1 in 12,000 to 20,000 people. During Lent, which ends with Easter, Christians are called on to fast, practice more good deeds, give alms, be close to the needy and suffering, and give up something (such as sweets). Due to the pandemic, ashes are being sprinkled, or given out as "takeaway" ash to mark #Lent under lockdown. #AshWednesday

Tonight marks the first night of the Jewish holiday of Chanukah. The flame of the candle, which is lit each night, signifies hope amidst darkness, salvation in challenging times. This year the message is especially meaningful. A group of university students in New York, The Maccabeats, formed an acapella group during their spare time. They have been somewhat famous and even performed at the White House chanukah party. Best wishes for a Happy #Chanukah to those celebrating! https://youtu.be/u6PvoWmHiUs
