This is a great article to read if you have recently shifted to doing online therapy. I personally love #7 which is "dont be afraid to give your therapist feedback". As the article mentions, many of us therapists are new to video sessions, so if theres anything we can do to help make sessions better for you, we would love to hear it! https://www.healthline.com//7-essential-tips-for-making-th

So simple and so complex. So many of our decisions are based on pleasing others and to do so, we often put our own needs on the back burner. We forget that we are a priority in our life and make others our main focus. When you see yourself stuck in a decision that includes balancing your own needs with the needs of others, I think this is a grwat question to begin asking. Even if you arent yet at a stage where youre ready to change your behaviours, just knowing what your response WOULD be if you were ready to make changes is an amazing place to start! #cbt #cognitivebehaviourtherapy #therapy #mentalhealth #mentalhealthtips

What happened to you is not your fault. If you were abused, mistreated, hurt... I want you to know you did not deserve that. You deserve to be loved and treated with respect, kindness and compassion and if you did not get that I am genuinely so so sorry. What happened was not your fault. Now that is has happened though you get to make a choice: Do you live with the wound forever or do you choose to heal from it? Even though it wasnt your fault, youre the only one who can do anything to heal from that mistreatment. This can be a p*ss off sometimes but its the truth so I beg of you, allow yourself to begin healing. You deserve it. #counsellor #cognitivebehaviourtherapy #cbt #cbtkamloops #kamloopscounsellor #kamloopsbc #kamloopsnow #kamloopstherapy #kamloopstherapist

An old client just reached out to me by email with SUCH a good question! I wrote her a fairly lengthy reply, and wanted to share that with everyone cause I think a lot of us could learn to trust ourselves more! Heres what I said: "The answer is a really big one. To learn to trust ourselves, we first have to look at where the trust broke down. What events caused you not to trust yourself? What impacts did that have on you? How did you start treating yourself differently base...d on this break down of trust? Explore what happened to lead to a break down of trust then what happened because of the break down. Then, we need to grab some self-compassion and start asking ourselves why we had to break down this trust. It may seem hard to see it yourself (ask for help from trusted people if you want) but I guarantee there was a reason you broke this trust. Some ideas to start your brain thinking (but please keep thinking way beyond this!): you broke your trust because an adult claimed otherwise and you needed the security (food, shelter, etc) they provided, so you broke their trust to maintain this relationship. You were too traumatized/stressed/overwhelmed to stop and recognize what your needs were so you didnt even know you were breaking your own trust. To protect others you had to break your own trust. Those are a few examples of why we break trust; start there then see if that cant get your mind exploring. Accepting that we broke our own trust is REALLY hard because it requires accepting that we didnt always do what was best for ourselves (which is super emotionally difficult to do!). BUT if we can match that with the compassionate understanding that we didnt just do this for the heck of it (there was a reason we had to break this trust), this can help the process. Once you have a bit of a sense of this, look at what you explored in the first part about how your behaviours changed due to the breakdown of trust and now begin exploring what it would mean to trust yourself. How would you act? What boundaries would you set? What would you do to honour your needs? What compassionate acts would you do to repair this trust with the self (this is a big one here)? Your question was a big one, so my answer is a big one and obviously there is a lot to what it takes, but hopefully this can get your mind and heart/soul thinking about trust and exploring it in a new way. One of my favourite things to remind clients of is this idea that we can both be healing AND already be a masterpiece. That we do not have to wait until we are "there" to love ourselvs and see our value. The problem with the idea that we have to get "there" before we can love ourselves and feel like we are enough, is that no one ever feels like they are "there". So learning to see ourselves as a masterpiece as we are now and still do the work to become who we want to be is a hugely important part of the journey! #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #kamloops #kamloopscounsellor #kamloopslife #kamloopsbc

Reviewing notes from a workshop I went to in December about Vicarious trauma, which is when we become traumatized from hearing and experiencing others trauma stories. This workshop also talked about compassion fatigue and burnout. Something that I have always loved about the filed of psychology is that it is a relatively new field, with research emerging all the time. Here is some new research discussing how people with depression may speak differently than those who are not depressed. Practical implications could involve becoming more accurate at assessing who is depressed and providing help. https://qz.com//depression-warning-signs-pay-attention-to/

When we have suffered for long enough, that suffering can become part of our identity; the suffering is who we are and without it, we sometimes question who we are. This can actually inhibit healing so learning to become aware of what stops us from healing is a huge part of getting better. #cbt #counselling #kamloopscounsellor #kamloops #kamloopsbc

I like to compare people. o plants a lot and heres why: when a plant isnt doing well, we never assume the plant is broken but rather we think that the environment in which the plant finds itself isnt right for the plant. We look at factors like lighting levels, humidity, temperature, amount of water... But never do we think the plant itself is broken. So if youre feeling broken, trying thinking of yourself like a plant and seeing if anything in your environment needs a little tweak to help you flourish #cbt #fivepartmodel #analogy #kamloopscounsellor #kamloops #explorekamloops

Here is a great little handout on anxiety. A lot of people are not very aware of their anxiety as it increases and only notice it when it is at a high level. If we can learn to notice our anxiety as it rises, we are better able to manage it before it becomes too extreme. This handout aims to help you do just that!

4 pillars of happiness! 1. Belonging: do you belong to a group where you can be you? Not a group where you are liked for what you can offer but a group where you are appreciated for who you are. 2. Purpose: while purpose can come from your job, it does not have to. Purpose refers to finding a greater meaning to guide your life. 3.Transcendence: this refers to finding moments that help you rise above your daily life. Moments of joy, awe and inspiration that remove you from "...the grind" and bring you to a new level. 4. Story telling: what is the story you tell yourself about the way things are? How do you understand the world around you? As a counsellor, this is where I spend most of my time with clients. We need to find new ways to understand our world and how we interact with it. #positivepsychology #pillarsofhappiness #happinessexplained #rcc #kamloopscounsellor #explorekamloops #kamloopsbc See more

if we are willing to look and see it, there is something we can learn or gain from every situation. No matter how horrendous it may seem, sometimes we have to thank the storm we are going through because its the only way we are able to learn a particular lesson. And when we can be in the storm and start to ask "what can I learn from this situation?" instead of "why is this happening to me?" we change the level of suffering that comes from the storm. #counselor #kamloopsbc #kamloopscounsellor #kamloopslife

Quick video on managing negative emotions. This technique of riding the wave and viewing emotions and a set of physical sensations works amazingly for many emotions such as worry, fear, anger, sadness, grief. Wow! I love this idea that sometimes we have to protect ourselves from ourselves. We are all used to the idea of standing up to others but we forget that we may have to stand up to ourselves in order to be gentle and kind. Self love takes many forms and it may even take the firm of confronting ourselves. #kamloopsbc #kamloops #counsellor

This lesson is a difficult one to come to terms with: the idea that self-love must be all encompassing. We must love the hard, difficult parts of our life as much as we love the easy parts. We must embrace the pain and the beauty, the pretty and the ugly. When we hate a part of ourselves, we simply cannot love ourselves fully. #counsellor #kamloopslife #kamloopsbc #kamloopscounsellor #registeredclinicalcounsellor

I love to ask myself this question whenever I notice myself putting off a task that will lead me closer to the life I want to live. For example, before I started my master degree in counselling, I told myself that I was too young to start a Masters degree. So I asked myself "if I dont do it now, when will I consider myself ready?". When I really took a moment to examine this question, I realized I would never feel ready and this was just an excuse I was using to keep myself small. I challenge you to use this question yourself whenever you notice yourself putting off the things that bring you closer to your goals. #kamloopsbc #explorekamloops #kamloopslife #kamloops #kamloopscounsellor

Who you are today is simply the accumulation of all the experiences you have had. To remove any experience changes who yiu are today. That means that if yiu are to love yourself, you need to come to terms with your past and the experiences you have had. You dont need to love them, but you need to be able to accept they happened so that you can accept who you are because of them. Obviously easier said than done, but an important step for self love and self acceptance. #kamloops #kamloopscounsellor #counselling
