Dear Civil Eng. Graduate Students, We at CEGSS are excited to invite you to participate in this year´s 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. UBC was one of the first universities in North America to host a 3-Minute-Thesis competition and has been presenting the 3MT since 2011. Every year heats are held across campus beginning in February, with winners moving on to the UBC-wide Semi-Finals and Finals in March. CEGSS is organizing the heats of the 3MT for all students and research...ers from the Civil Engineering department. We have great prizes this year, including $50, $35 and $25 Gift Cards for the winner and runners up respectively. Additionally, we´ll have a surprise for all the participants presenting their work, make sure to register at the link below! This is a great opportunity for all grad students to present, engage and encourage our department's research. We have made the registration open for an extended duration to accommodate more presenters. Do share among your colleagues and invite them to the exciting 3MT. The 3 MT 2020 event was a grand success!
Given the broad scientific consensus that global climate change is now occurring on a time scale shorter than the life of most infrastructure, it is clear that our design criteria must be adapted to take climate change into account. Join the CSCE Vancouver Section on Thursday, March 12th at 6pm for the presentation that will be delivered by Jean-Luc Martel from Lasalle | NHC inc. as he will provide a picture of future climate projections across Canada and the expected impact...s of climate change on our infrastructure. Our world is characterized by increasing uncertainty, accelerating change, and new realities. In response, Stamina for Sustainability is a new co-curricular program that aims to unpack assumptions and theories of change related to sustainability in order to deepen participants’ analytical skills, emotional intelligence, and individual resilience. Through a three-day residency at the UBC Farm, plus follow-up activities, we invite future sustainability leaders to embrace unce...rtainty, engage alternative ways of knowing and being, create space for critical reflection, and activate a deeper, collective accountability to the planet and each other. By doing so, we support participants to develop the capacities and stamina needed to support individual and collective well-being in the face of unprecedented global challenges. Download our program guide, register for our January 29 information session, and apply by February 23 at sustain.ubc.ca/stamina.

We have a brand new team for the new academic year!
On behalf of Wyatt, who is part of the mobilization committee for CUPE 2278, the UBC TA union: We are starting bargaining this Thursday and throughout the bargaining process the mobilization, the committee will be doing everything we can to update the TAs and rally them behind the bargaining committee. One of the ways we are doing this is through events, and our first is this week! We are having a pub night to kick things off on November 7th from 4:30-8:00 at the Gallery, to support the bargaining committee and give TAs from every department the chance to meet, get to know each other, and learn about the bargaining process.
