Opening virtually tonight - "The Remains of a Journey" Friday, November 13, 2020, 6 PM 7:30 PM Hosted digitally on Zoom, Link in bio.... The artist Gu Xiong will be in attendance and will be in a conversation with the exhibition's curators Henry Heng Lu and Steven Dragonn. Comprised of a new body of multimedia works, along with archival materials sourced from multiple official archives, the exhibition revives three historic sites across British Columbia that bear the untold struggles of the Chinese immigrants: the destroyed Bone House of Harling Point, the Leper Colony of D’Arcy Island, and the burnt-down Chinatown in Cumberland. It takes the form of an immersive installation that reanimates these early Chinese immigrant experiences during an era of exclusionist policies. Part of Gu Xiong’s ongoing investigation into the living conditions of the early Chinese immigrants since 2011, the exhibition sparks an uncanny parallel to the anti-Chinese sentiment prevailing during the current coronavirus pandemic. Part II of the exhibition exploring the Canada Village in Kaiping, China, the New Westminster Chinese Cemetery, and the Mountain View Chinese Cemetery, is on display at Canton-sardine (Unit 071, 268 Keefer Street) simultaneously. The exhibition runs from November 14, 2020 to February 13, 2021. Visit the link in our bio for more details. Image: Gu Xiong, Harling Point, 2020, inkjet print, 24" x 36". Courtesy of the artist.

Each recipient of the VIVA Award receives $15,000 from the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts. Lucie’s exhibition To Be Free, Everything You Most Hate and Fear, on view at Centre A from January to March 2020, questioned racialized imagery, representation, and distinct documentation, concerning commodification of identity and that of Black and multiracial identities, specifically.

Hot off the press! The first five copies of the 2021 MAU Calendar are now available for purchase from Centre A’s boutique. All proceeds will go towards supporting Centre A’s programming. This year's edition of 200 calendars features artworks by local artists Jamie Loh, Cindy Mochizuki, Hue Nguyen and Stella Zheng, along with original recipes and texts by local restauranteurs and community members. The MAU Calendar is an artist- and community-driven publication that engages lo...cal artists, communication designers, writers and makers in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Now in its third year, this limited-edition Risograph printed calendar continues to capture a contemporary portrait of the community and is inspired by traditional rice paper Chinese lunar calendars. Through contributed family food recipes, original writings, histories, community and cultural event listings, the calendar can be read as both a historical record and artist publication. The 2019 and 2020 editions were accepted into the UBC Rare Books and Special Collections and Emily Carr University Library Artist Book Collection. This year's edition was created and led by an extraordinary creative team, including Megan Chen, Triet Pham, Melanie Kwan, and Christine Wong. Each calendar is 10"x15" and is comprised of 13 unbound Risograph-prints on 67lb natural paper stock by Centre A’s neighbour Moniker Press, a Chinatown-based Risograph print and publishing studio. Limited-time offers are available at the boutique if you wish to purchase both the 2020 and 2021 editions. While supplies last. All photos by Triet Pham/Megan Chen.

Hi, it’s Charisma again! Here is another treasure from our ‘vault.’ It’s been a pleasure learning more about Centre A’s exhibition history. There’s more to explore on our website at centrea.org! Come and celebrate the end of summer with us in the gallery. Our current exhibition, We cast Spells, is open until October 17. We are open from Wednesdays to Fridays, between noon and 5 PM, as well as Saturdays by appointment. Charisma, Curatorial Assistant #CentreAArchives... REDRESS EXPRESS: Chinese Restaurants and the Head Tax Issue in Canadian Art An exhibition that brought its audience face to face with ideas of reparation and progress, especially concerning the Asian Canadian communities, REDRESS EXPRESS: Chinese Restaurants and the Head Tax Issue in Canadian Art at Centre A in 2007 featured photography, video and installation works by five Chinese Canadian artists: Gu Xiong, Shelly Low, Ho Tam, Karen Tam, and Kira Wu. Held in conjunction with the two-day symposium REDRESS EXPRESS: Current Directions in Asian Canadian Art and Culture curated by Alice Ming Wai Jim, which brought together over twenty scholars, community activists, cultural organizers, and artists from many disciplines to consider current and future directions in Asian Canadian art and culture. As a whole, the project was an attempt to examine the contemporary politics of representation, redress and recognition in Canada as they relate to art, activism, identity and geography. A reflection and introspection of the victory of the redress campaign for Chinese Head Tax payers and their spouses, the exhibition discussed the victory’s inevitable effects on the current politics of reparation and representation in this country, and the challenges of ensuring the ongoing, rigorous treatment these issues demand in political, cultural and educational sectors.
