Here is another informative map in our collection: the "Coast telegraph chart of the Gulf and lower St. Lawrence and Maritime Provinces" by L. N. Dufresne in 1876 with corrections to 1881. https://collections.mun.ca/digital/collection/maps/id/354 #mapmonday
Happy New Year from the Centre for Newfoundland Studies!
Here is just a small selection from our collection that shows Carl Lake’s contributions to recording the history of sports in our province.
The recent passing of Howie Meeker led us to check our holdings for related materials and this is a selection that showcases his impact on our province. Our condolences to his family and friends.
As Patron of the Newfoundland and Labrador Historical Society I am pleased to highlight a film by Jon Sturge titled Fifty Nine Steps to the Crow’s Nest. The f...ilm being released today, November 10th at 2pm NST, to commemorate Remembrance Day 2020, will be available free on the Crow's Nest Officers' Club YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGaeLtTAADc. The Crow’s Nest Officers’ Club was established January 27th, 1942 as a retreat for allied naval & merchant officers during wartime, a place to share stories of victory & loss. Now a living museum, owned & supported by volunteer members, the club commemorates contributions of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve & the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve during WWII. The Crow’s Nest was designated a heritage structure by Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage in April, 1990. See more
Although we honour them differently this year. Their names. Their faces. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. We will REMEMBER. #lestweforget2020
As early as 1962, there was talk of a pedestrian mall for Water Street in downtown St. John's. Here's an article in the Newfoundland Journal of Commerce: http://collections.mun.ca///collection/cns_period/id/61858
We are working behind-the-scenes on the Digital Archives Initiative (DAI's) functionality and appearance so it looks a little different. In the meantime, the data remains available for researchers: https://collections.mun.ca
Please note that there is no security risk despite the certificate warning.
Please note, we are experiencing issues with the Digital Archive Initiative (DAI). We are working on the problem and will update as soon as it is resolved.
Some of our collections are just too special! Not everything is digitized and not everything circulates. Today's selection for #MapMonday is this beauty showing Labrador "Estotilandia et Laboratoris terra" by Corneille Wytfliet in 1597. http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/maps/id/99
Should be fun for all hands! And CNS is here to help!
This map of the Island of Newfoundland by Frederick Page in 1859 shows the electoral districts at that time by colour coding. #MapMonday http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/maps/id/206
This is why I miss my CNS family so much. Not only did she drop off completed work, Jackie Hillier left this on my step as well. Thank you for this pick-me-up surprise!
Congratulations to authors James Hiller and Anne Budgell! "Robert Bond: A Political Biography" and "We All Expected to Die: Spanish Influenza in Labrador, 1918-...1919" are shortlisted for the 2020 Heritage and History Book Award! In recognition of NONIA's 100th anniversary, here is an article from the Newfoundland Quarterly way back in its early days of 1925:http://collections.mun.ca//r/collection/quarterly/id/25201
CNS was sad to hear of the passing of Harold Paddock from Beaumont, Long Island who taught for over 30 years in the Department of Linguistics at MUN. He contributed to the Dictionary of Newfoundland English and the Dialect Atlas of Newfoundland and Labrador project. Scores of past students will no doubt remember him fondly. As his obituary states, "His comforting presence and unique voice will be forever missed". Our condolences to his family and friends. https://www.carnells.com/
In recognition of Amelia Earhart's historic 1932 flight from Newfoundland to Ireland, here is an article from our files:http://collections.mun.ca//r/collection/cns_article/id/884
The map shown and described in that 1973 MUN Gazette article is the Visscher map circa 1690. http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/maps/id/45 #MapMonday
On this date (May 18th) in 1973, CNS was profiled in the MUN Gazette. Its mandate to build a "forever collection" for our province remains the same today. http://collections.mun.ca///collection/mun_gazette/id/1422 Queen Elizabeth II Library
This will give you an idea of the many contributions made to our province by Gerald Penney. Such a legacy to leave for all of us.
CNS was sad to hear this news today. Gerry was a regular at CNS as both a researcher and an out-of-print book dealer. He made so many contributions to our province, was well-respected and always pleasant. Our condolences to his family and friends.
Here's our James Cook 1775 General chart of the island of Newfoundland with the rocks & soundings. http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/maps/id/142 #MapMonday

So, it's yes to the spoon, no to the shopping cart! Couldn't resist sharing this ad from Devine's folk lore of Newfoundland (1937). http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/cns/id/62517 #WittyWednesdays
Our condolences to the family and friends of this remarkable woman.
Today's post for #MapMonday is one of our original manuscript maps: Levin Reichel's "Labrador : Aivektôk oder Eskimo Bay" from 1872. http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/maps/id/52
Today we are showcasing our map of St. John's in 1856 that not only gives details on the mercantile premises but also a "Fog Table". http://collections.mun.ca/cdm/ref/collection/maps/id/291 #MapMonday
