Every generation has believed that the Book of Revelation is speaking to their times. Why have they all been wrong? We'll look at the long history of failed predictions that the Apocalypse was imminent, from the many precursors to the Book of Revelation to its readers who continue to misinterpret the text to the present day.

How warfare in the Middle Ages was justified as "holy" by Muslims and Christians. We’ll look at the original holy wars fought between Medieval Christianity and Islam. Can we draw lessons from these past conflicts for the 21st century world?

How did the religion of the "Prince of Peace" triumph over the warrior gods of Asgard and Valhalla? Beginning in the 8th century AD, pagan Norsemen plundered the monasteries of the Frankish and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. How could warrior gods like Thor and Odin lose out to Jesus?

"Here there be dragons": We'll look at how Medieval Christians understood their world from the maps they drew of it. Modern myth holds that people in the so-called "Dark Ages" believed the world was flat until Columbus proved otherwise. We'll learn about the actual Medieval worldview from a survey of dozens of Medieval maps.

Mindfulness and Lectio Divina focusing on scripture passages we will further explore this Sunday during our Beyond the Walls online church service. This week we will focus on The Parable of the Mustard Seed. Join us for a moment of relaxation as we open mind, body, and soul to the word and let the spirit transform our lives one breath at a time. Logos Meditation is a meditative service that combines the contemplation of sacred text (Lectio Divina,) with mindfulness, centering... prayer, and chanting. This meditative practice aims to find common ground between the mystic traditions of Christianity and Buddhism, and the modern academic perspectives. This meditative practice aims to explore the Bible and other sacred sources the Western and Eastern traditions by immersing the whole mind, body, and spirit in the word, as opposed to the exclusively intellectual approach of exegesis. We also find common ground between the mystic traditions of Christianity and Buddhism, and the modern academic perspectives in order to deepen our practice. All are welcome. LGBTQ+ affirming. Interfaith.

Mindfulness and Lectio Divina focusing on scripture passages we will further explore this coming Sunday during Beyond the Walls. This week we will focus on two lectionary readings, Matthew 10:40-42, concerning rewards, and Genesis 22:1-14, the story of The Command to Sacrifice Isaac. We will consider what motivates us to do what's morally right. Is it honest love for other beings or the promise of reward? Join us for a moment of relaxation as we open mind, body, and soul to... the word and let the spirit transform our lives one breath at a time. Our mission calls us to fight conditions that diminish the worth of persons by responding in times of crisis and by helping those who hurt. This #BlackoutTuesday we are suspending our live streamed events because it is our duty to pause and listen to the voices who are crying out against systemic racism in law enforcement and other related injustices in our society. Let us not stand by passively and idly, but compassionately engage in nonviolent dialogue and action to bring change and to protect and empower those who hurt. #blackoutday2020 #blacklivesmatter #blackout

Five Hindrances Episode 6 mindfulness meditation on DOUBT. We are taking care of our physical health by washing our hands and keeping social distance, but what are we doing to take care of our mental health. The constant simmering fear and anxiety due to the coronavirus COVID-19 might lead some of us into a downward spiral of an anxiety disorder and even depression. Let us take care of ourselves and those around us with 30 minutes of guided mindfulness meditation with exerci...ses for regulating breath, posture, and stream of thoughts. Our approach brings together the modern, secular mindfulness techniques and research, as well as the perspectives of the ancient contemplative traditions from East and West. These sessions are open to everyone: we welcome all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and gender identities and expressions. We respect all spiritual types and sensibilities, from those who simply want to achieve deep relaxation, manage stress, anxiety, and depression, to those who walk the path of spiritual growth. You decide what the meaning of your meditation is. All levels are welcome. This is a judgment-free, non-competitive environment.
