Calgary Ethiopian Youth Alliance 14.11.2020

As immigrants to this land we whole heartedly support and stand with Indigenous peoples across this country. It is our duty to be educated on issues that pertain to this land and it’s original peoples. What’s happening in Nova Scotia is not about conservation, it is racism. What the Mi’Kma’Ki fishermen have experienced is terrorism.

We stopped by the @calgarycommunityfridge today with two bags worth of fresh produce, dairy products, and non perishable items. It was exciting to finally be able to see the community fridge! What an innovative way to get food to people who need it most. I’ve been reflecting a lot on food insecurity, access to nutritious and fresh foods, food banks, community food centres and gardens. The roles these spaces play in our society, the need for these spaces and the limitations of... these emergency resources. This has been a challenging year for many and we are still just figuring out the long term impacts COVID will have in our communities. Food insecurity has always been a problem in our country and the pandemic has only heightened that. And as as #CERB ends in October food banks across Canada are expecting more visitors. Food banks have existed here in Canada for about 40 years and though the work they do is INCREDIBLE, it is just a small bandage on a huge problem. We need policy changes to make sure no one in our country struggles with food insecurity & access to nutritious foods. Wouldn’t it be a dream to one day be able to phase out these resources? That no one would need to access a food bank to put food on their table? But, in the mean time we can all do small things to help our fellow community members, while also advocating for long lasting and meaningful change! If you can donate anything, please do! This beauty of a fridge is located at 902 Centre St North! #communityfridge #foodinsecurity #foodbanks #cerb #covid #foodforthought

At CEYA we stand with residential school survivors & are committed to a future of reconciliation that is Indigenous led. #Orangeshirtday is a day to recognize the harm done by residential schools to Indigenous communities and as a way to honour all those impacted. The orange shirt refers to a new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given by her grandmother for her first day of school at St.Joseph’s Mission Residential School in colonial British Colombia. When she arrived to school, her clothes were taken away and never returned.

This year has been tough on so many of us, mentally, emotionally, financially but we’ve really seen the Calgary community come together to uplift one another. Earlier this week Black People United Calgary, reached out to us to see if any children in our community needed back packs full of shook supplies for back to school. We found 14 children who were in need of some supplies. Today we were able to pick them up and will be delivering them later this week. Thank you for al...l the work you’re doing in our communities, Black People United. If you, or anyone you know, is in need of a backpack & school supplies, please send us a message and we will try to set you up with some school supplies.
