Over the last month, GMRC, in collaboration with the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council, has been conducting siltation mitigation work in the St. Qu...entin area. Nine silt traps have been built to help prevent silt from entering the river system and causing harm to vulnerable Atlantic salmon spawning grounds. Atlantic salmon need coarse substrate with pebbles and rocks for spawning and rearing. The silt traps will prevent this critical habitat from getting smothered by the fine sediment. Along with the new silt traps constructed, we have also emptied three existing traps. It is important to provide maintenance to the traps and to ensure they are emptied periodically. The work is made possible by the Canadian Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk. Photos courtesy of Miriam Lebeau and David Leblanc.
