Blog Time Hello everyone! Today we have a very exciting topic to discuss.. students from Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts in South Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen, Aldergrove, and Mission may recognize it it’s: THE STAR PROGRAM!... At our Taekwondo Dojang we give out stars for students who work hard during their classes. They are able to earn EXTRA stars if they work EXTRA hard! Other ways to earn more stars are to: Read books Get good grades on a report card Earn achievements in extra-curricular activities Draw a picture about Taekwondo or the word of the month Complete the monthly star chart And more! So you have some stars, but what do we do with them?? Let’s look at the reward system we have! 50 Stars: Tiger Badge 100 Stars: Trophy (XS) 150 Stars: Trophy (S) 200 Stars: Trophy (M) 250 Stars: Trophy (L) 300 Stars: Trophy (XL) The star program is a great way to get our students motivated to work hard and help out around the house. By the time they have earned their 300 star trophy, they will have internalized this motivation. This means their character will have improved! Let’s earn some stars! Train hard, and see you on the mats!

A few words about loyalty Hello everyone! Can you believe we’re already into February?? Where is 2021 going! We have an exciting new word of the month to discuss with all our students from Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts in South Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen, Aldergrove and Mission. Loyalty... I’ll stand by you Faithful, and committed to a person, place, group, or cause. Loyalty starts at home, we are loyal to our siblings, our parents and our family in general. Loyalty could be sticking up for a younger sibling, or it could be putting your family first instead of hanging out with friends. Loyalty at school becomes slightly more complicated, with other pressures to join friend groups or want to fit in. This could cause us to become loyal to some and disloyal to others. Loyalty in the workplace is even more fraught with trouble. We do what we must to advance our own careers and our own interests. But as well know, this is not the way to be happy, and content with ourselves and our character. We want to live a life of meaning; a life of character. Whether we know it or not, we all wish we were loyal to that which is important to us. If we have our actions and goals aligned with our intention of who we want to be and why we can be loyal, humble, gracious, generous and all the qualities we wish to see in the world. So next time you see a conflict of interest arising, how can you show loyalty? How can you align the outcome with who you want to be? Martial arts training helps with this. We all wear the same thing, we all train the same art, and we are all equal on the mats. We all have the same goals; we’re all climbing the same mountain. So when we’re training, really contemplate how you’re not just training your bodybut also your mind and spirit (character) as well! See you on the mats.

So why warmup before training? Hello everyone! We have a set journey on which every student embarks each time they step on our mats. Each student bows in, and then we all do our stretching exercises! Stretching is important! Students from Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts in South Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen, Aldergrove, and Mission all spend at least five minutes of stretching every class.... But why do we stretch? Stretching at the beginning of Taekwondo training helps us avoid injuries! Do we perform spinning hook kicks, and front turning kicks, or side kicks and jumping 180 kicks every day? The answer (maybe yes!) but usually no! So we our body needs to get ready to perform these unusual movements before we start doing them with speed and power. Let’s look at what we do during our days. - Walking - Standing - Sitting (usually not cross-legged) - Climbing stairs What do all these things have in common? They are all performed in a straight forward way and involve only the front of our body. So we stretch our muscles every class to avoid injuries and help wake up our muscles and joints to get ready for the extreme hip motions in Taekwondo Training! Make sure we stretch at home as well. See you on the mats.

How YOU can FALL in love with Rolling! Hello everyone! Here at Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts we train Taekwondo for the purpose of benefiting the lives our students. Our students from across the lower mainland; in South Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen, Aldergrove, and Mission join Taekwondo to be healthy, learn to defend themselves and their loved ones, join a great and respectful community (sadly a rarity these days!), and there are so many other reasons. One reason we b...elieve you’re going to love our dojang (training hall), is that we train Taekwondo as a ‘complete martial art.’ What does that mean? Complete martial art? Well, Taekwondo involves many upper body striking, and blocking techniques. Taekwondo is renowned for it’s lower body focus, our leg power and kicking abilities. What Taekwondo would benefit from is more groundwork! More throws, joint locks, takedowns, and pins. Enter: Hapkido! Our Grand Master and Master both trained in Hapkido (a Korean grappling art). The rolling, body defence, joint locks (and much more) have made it into our training! We believe this makes our Taekwondo training, complete! Students can learn to protect themselves from A) Themselves (bad habits and bad mindsets; improve discipline) Harmful people (Bullies, Strangers, etc.) C) Falling Admit it we all fall! In sports, ice, snow, tripping, not paying attention, upset spouse, ankle-biting child, etc... So next time we practice during our rolling week, let’s take a renewed interest and dive deep into these techniques that will ‘round’ out our training! See you on the mats.

But why do we write on the wooden boards before we break them? Hello everyone! Students from Chang’s Taekwondo Martial Arts in South Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen, Aldergrove, and Mission are testing this week! Those who show sufficient skill will promote to the next rank. This promotion happens during our Belt Promotion Ceremony!... Master Chang attends each ceremony, and you’ll be doing more than receiving a new belt. We begin with a bad habit; something you want to stop or something you want to improve! This bad habit is a promise, to yourself first a foremost. We first keep promises to ourselves; then we extend that to others. There will be witnesses! Your family may attend, your Instructors will be there, and even Master Chang will oversee your promotion! We are all here to support you on your martial arts journey. At the same time we are there to support you as you make a promise.. and keep it! Train hard, and see you on the mats!

Everything you need to know about Taekwondo sparring! Hello everyone! Your local Chang’s Taekwondo Martial arts school in south Surrey, Cloverdale, Tsawwassen, Aldergrove, and Mission hope you had a great long weekend. We love the extra day of rest, but we miss our students! Make sure you’re scheduling your make-up class for Mondays closure. We just finished our sparring week of our rotating curriculum. Now we wanted to explain some of the history and ideas behind Taekwondo... sparring, and why it is part of our curriculum. Taekwondo Sparring debuted in the global scene with the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. During the 1988 Olympics, Taekwondo was a ‘demonstration’ sport, meaning it was not officially recognized, although popularity increased thanks to the publicity! After years of effort on the part of the World Taekwondo, Taekwondo sparring become an officially recognized Olympic sport in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The matches were terrifically exciting! Sparring includes the use of protective equipment to ensure our athletes can enjoy the game while minimizing injuries. To compete in sparring you need: - Helmet - Mouthgear - Forearm guards - Gloves - Chest guard - Cup - Shin guards - Foot guards - Taekwondo dobok (uniform) There is a red and a blue competitor in each match, along with a sharply dressed referee. Coaches are sitting outside the ring, watching intensely to offer advice and encouragement during the small break between matches. The point system in Taekwondo is as follows: - 1 point for a punch to the body (no punches to the head!) - 2 points for a kick to the body - 3 points for a ‘spinning’ kick to the body - 4 points for a kick to the head - 5 points for a ‘spinning’ kick to the head - minus 1 point for falling - Minus 1 point for warnings (kicking too low, etc) At the end of the two rounds, the competitor with the most points wins! Now don’t be fooled, Taekwondo sparring is not a brawl. There is strategy required to win. While sparring you’re looking for various signals, to help you formulate a plan.. Is your opponent: - Aggressive? - Cautious? - Right leg dominant? - Left leg dominant? - Tall? - Short? - Blocking or sliding? - And much more! Taekwondo sparring develops our confidence, physical body, mental abilities and our martial spirit. We start and finish every match with a bow, and when we shake hands after the match has concluded, athletes shake hands with the opposing coach as well. We also have dedicated sparring training at each of our dojangs, talk to your Instructors about signing up and giving it a try today!
