Today marks the beginning of Transgender Awareness Week. This week helps raise visibility for the community and helps educate others on the barriers and issues ...that Transgender individuals face on a day to day basis. We encourage you to seek out learning opportunities and to listen to the firsthand knowledge of those in the community. We thought these posts from GLAAD about moving beyond a gender binary are a great place to start!

October 4th until the 10th is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Week. As a society we should use this time to reflect on our own mental health and check in ...on those who may be struggling with mental illness. The reason we identify the second week of October as Mental Health Awareness week, is to build recognition for those who are suffering and to create an understanding of all the different forms of mental illness. You may be wondering how common is mental illness among Canadians? According to the Canadian Mental Health Association website: By age 40, about 50% of the population will have or have had a mental illness. Schizophrenia affects 1% of the Canadian population. Anxiety disorders affect 5% of the household population, causing mild to severe impairment. Suicide accounts for 24% of all deaths among 15-24 year olds and 16% among 25-44 year olds. The mortality rate due to suicide among men is four times the rate among women At VSW we receive calls from victims affected by suicide and other instances related to mental health. If you or someone you know is suffering from a mental illness, we urge you to seek help. It is okay to ask for help, it is okay to talk about it, you are not alone!
