Recent public health events have highlighted the need for food security in local communities. In northern (and less hospitable) climates like Canada long term, ...year round food growth will depend on indoor facilities such as greenhouses, vertical farms (plant factories), and hybrid facilities. Proper lighting is critical for these facilities to successfully produce the necessary quality and quantity of food to sustain the population at a reasonable cost. SunTracker has developed CAD modelling tools to allow the horticultural industry to assess and specify the most efficient and effective commercial lighting for the horticulture industry, lighting that is critical for the sustainability of food security with Cerise365+GreenHouseDesigner https://buff.ly/2NDArnN Now, who could be behind such a heroic act you ask? Meet our founder: Ian Ashdown P. Eng. (Ret.) FIES Senior Scientist He holds a Bachelor’s degree (1973) in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s degree (2001) in computer Science, and he is the author of Radiosity: A Programmer’s Perspective (Wiley 1994). The software presented in this book has been under continual development since its publication, and is licensed to Lighting Analysts (Littleton, CO) for their AGi32 and ElumTools architectural and roadway lighting design software, and to Glamox AS (Molde, Norway) for their OptiWin 3D Pro architectural and marine lighting design software. He is a member of the American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineers (ASABE), where he has served on three technical committees developing plant radiation metrics and horticultural luminaire testing and performance, and he is a member of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). His current research and development interests involve all aspects of horticultural lighting design. Ian Ashdown’s Full Bio: https://buff.ly/3gTaduw

There has been some discussion online and in presentations recently about the issue of photosynthetic photon flux. The argument goes as follows: 1. Photos...ynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is somewhat arbitrarily defined as optical radiation within the spectral range of 400 nm to 700 nm. 2. Exposing plants to far-red radiation (defined as 700 nm to 800 nm) results in an increase in the rate of photosynthesis the Emerson effect that was first noted in 1957 and confirmed by recent research. 3. Many horticultural luminaire manufacturers are now including far-red (725 nm) LEDs in their products. 4. The photosynthetic photon efficacy (PPE) of these luminaires is penalized by the definition of PAR because the far-red radiation is not taken into consideration. 5. The definition of PAR therefore needs to be changed to allow fair comparison of these products. The one-word answer to this argument is no. https://buff.ly/3inb3Re See more

In 2021, once a vaccine is available, I will once again host Indigenous Culinary Tours along with my private dinners. My news for 2020: Shirley has some 40 years of extensive experience in communications, marketing, and public relations. As a budding entrepreneur at the age of 21, Shirl promoted and grew her salons from a small start-up venture to several successful, established premium salons for the entertainment industry in Toronto. Starting at this time, Shirley nurtured ...her network of agents, promoters, and entertainers who would continue to collaborate with her throughout her varied career. Through these efforts, Shirl became intimate with print media, television and radio, and coordinated and hosted high-profile celebrity events. Among her accomplishments, Shirl was owner and operator of Brooke International Talent, wherein she was instrumental in successfully marketing, publicizing, and promoting her clients. Shirley also coinvented a hairdressing utility device. After moving to British Columbia, Shirl, who is proudly Cree/Metis, worked at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in Victoria as project coordinator for various projects. While there, she continued to hone and utilize her communication, marketing, and public relations skills to design and implement these programs. Shirl’s entrepreneurial spirit eventually led her to start another business as an award-winning and influential private chef, a company she started from scratch. Through her innovative and effective marketing efforts, Shirl built a thriving enterprise that expanded to include Indigenous culinary tours. Shirl joined SunTracker in early 2019 as VP of Communications and Marketing. Shirl’s experience in building strong relationships and integrity in everything she promotes has helped define SunTracker’s innovative and successful communications, marketing, and public relations strategies.
